Cougar PowerX 550W Power Supply Review

Starting with the build quality and design of the PowerX 550w we have a unit which is very clearly aimed at providing a low cost solution. That can be seen from the minimal packing inside the box, through the reasonably basic chassis to the components used inside. The single Japanese capacitor for example is 85c rated rather than 105°C and elsewhere we find Taiwanese alternatives (though they are 105°C rated). We did note that the adhesive application wasn’t great and the soldering average but the paintwork is applied well and we do like the mixed SATA/Molex cables, even if they are a little less useful on a non-modular unit. Finally, although it doesn’t directly impact the PSU functioning the fact that several components (Mini PCB, Mosfet’s, capacitors etc) inside were bent at odd angles isn’t great to see and again points towards a general lack of care during manufacturing which doesn’t occur on higher priced units.

In terms of performance the PowerX 550w does reasonably well. The voltages offered average stability, efficiency was in line with bronze certification and ripple within specification too… though still a little high for our liking. Temperatures and noise levels were also decent and the minimal noise combined with compact chassis size makes this a unit worth considering for compact HTPC builds.

So that brings us to value and at this time we don’t have any live links for the unit but can look to the 700w model for an indication. That model is very competitively priced and so we expect the same at 550w and combined with a 3-year warranty that makes this a unit which may well be attractive for those looking to minimise the cost of a build while still having a PSU that is more than just a bland black box.
