HTC One (Red) Android Smartphone Review

Times have been tough for HTC. For quite a while they looked like being the Android powerhouse to compete with Apple… or maybe even the handset manufacturer to compete given that they also offer Windows Phone devices… anyway, from successes like the Desire HD and impressive handsets like the Titan they saw Samsung begin to Dominate the market and when they most recently went head to head with the One X and S3 it was the Galaxy device which captured the imagination of consumers.

The success of the Galaxy S3 compared to the One X isn’t down to hardware though… the X arguably had the better build quality (easily beating the S3’s flimsy back with its polycarbonate body). The two devices had near identical specifications in some markets too with the UK/Euro handsets scoring near identical performance in 3DMark, as one example.

Mainly it seems that HTC had lost themselves in their Sense tweaks to the OS, in a handset range which isn’t marketed as well as Samsung. Tweaks are no bad thing… look at Nokia’s Lumia range. People like different. So what if HTC could design a handset which looked to compete not with Samsung but Apple in terms of build quality… and what if they refined their OS experience to add some differentiation from Samsung while staying a little closer to Android’s stock experience than Sense had in the past. Well with the HTC One in exclusive Red we find out and that is the focus of todays review.

Packaging and Bundle

HTC package their One in a rounded cardboard box and the top lifts off to reveal the handset, wrapped in protective plastic within. Strangely half of this inside tray is blank when it seems like the ideal place to explain a key feature of the phone but that’s HTC’s choice and digging further we find the bundled extras.

In a separate compartment below the phone we find the product documentation, charger with head that can be removed for travel, USB cable, headphones with alternative ear-buds and SIM tray tool. The headphones have a flat cable which makes them stand out a little but other than that this is a pretty standard bundle, so click next and we can take a look at the handset.
