HTC One Smartphone (Red) Review

The HTC One (Red)

The HTC One from the front

The One is shown above and it has a front surface which uses aluminium. The handset features a 4.7" Capacitive multi touch screen which uses Super LCD3 technology capable of 16 Million colours. It has a 1920×1080 resolution with 468ppi density and uses Corning Gorilla Glass 2. The dimensions are 137.4×68.2×9.3mm, weighing in at 143g.

Above the screen we have a speaker with built-in notification LED, proximity sensor, light sensor and front camera (2.1 megapixel, 1080p @ 30fps). The top edge then has the power button which doubles as an IR transmitter (yes you can control your TV through this) and the 3.5mm headset connector is also here.

Below the screen we have two touch sensitive buttons for back and home. It is also possible in the above image to see the USB port (MHL supported) on the bottom edge of the handset and a key item is the second grill. As well as the "HDR" mic on the HTC one we get two front mounted speakers, one at either end of the screen to enhance our sound over the competition. HTC use built in amplifiers for these and call the tech BoomSound.

The One from the rear

Turning round to the back of the handset we find a curved aluminium surface with the HTC logo centred, standing out in the sea of red. The Beats Audio logo is lower down with the camera towards the top end alongside the LED flash. The One features a 4 megapixel lens with 2688×1520 pixel resolution (1/3” sensor size, 2µm pixel size, F2.0/28mm) and autofocus is supported. HTC also allow picture capture during video recording. Touch focus, face/smile detection and image stabilisation along with Geo-Tagging are all present. Video can be recorded at up to 1080p at 30fps along with stereo sound and stabilisation.

The only item of note on the left side of the handset is a sim tray and turning to the right side we find the volume rocker.

Normally we would open the handset at this stage to reveal the battery but the One is designed not to be opened and has no removable battery. In terms of specification it is a Li-Po model with 2300mAh rating. Elsewhere in the internals we have 1.7GHz quad core Snapdragon 600 chipset with Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Storage is 32GB and for sensors we have the aforementioned proximity and light sensors along with gyro and accelerometer with connectivity featuring 4G/LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP, A-GPS, DNLA and WiFi-N/ac (dual band). Also worth noting is that a carrier dependant option is NFC compatibility.
