NETGEAR R6250 Wireless AC Dual Band Gigabit Router Review

Setting up the R6250 is a straight forward affair and anyone familiar with routers will have no issues. Once the correct cable connections are made it’s a simple case of accessing the NETGEAR Genie through a browser (wired or wireless) to begin configuring the router to our preferences.

The first step is to set up our Internet connection, an automatic process for most people where the router takes control and completes its configuration. Following this, we get access to the main Genie interface, which gives us a summary of the key network characteristics.

Down the left side of the Genie interface we find a selection of options and the first allows us to configure our wireless settings, choosing names for our two networks as well as their security settings, speed and channels. By creating a guest network our main password can be kept secure and restrictions can be imposed on local network access.

The Devices menu allows us to monitor and configure hardware attached to the network and a little further down are the ReadySHARE options.

ReadySHARE is split into two sections with the first giving us access to storage configuration. In here, we can configure a USB drive for access on any device connected to the network, sharing files as if they were a folder on our PC. NETGEAR even provide a tool, which launches the folder addition wizard within Windows.

The second ReadySHARE section allows us to plug a USB printer into our router and then share it to any device on the network. A screen tells us that a printer driver needs to be installed on each device and a tool is provided to ensure each system see’s it but past that, the print experience is as if the printer was wired direct to the system.

ReadySHARE Cloud is not available with the R6250.

The R6250 also has the option to upgrade firmware when new versions are released, ensuring that we always have the best performance and features through the life of the unit.

NETGEAR also support Smartphones for basic administration of the router, with the Genie app available on Android and iOS App Stores.

Finally as far as router configuration goes we have access to advanced settings which allow us to further tweak our R6250 for QoS, Media use and more admin tasks such as changing passwords and viewing log files and advanced settings for almost all expects of the routers performance.
