NETGEAR R6250 Wireless AC Dual Band Gigabit Router Review

User Experience / Conclusion and Rating

I’m a fan of NETGEAR’s design overhaul last year, so it’s good to see the trend continue. That said the piano black finish while sleek attracts dust very easily, something to keep in mind when placing the device in your home setup.

Due to the design wall mounting isn’t an option, hopefully in future designs this will become an option again. It really comes down to the little things when trying to fault the R6250, the lack of activity LEDs on the Ethernet ports for example, is this cost saving in the extreme? Or NETGEAR simply trying to distinguish their router specs. While moving to USB 3.0 is a step forward, removing the side port takes away from the quick accessibility of other routers in the range. The same can be said with the removal of the ReadyShare Cloud feature, clearly reserved for their premium range. A plus for the R6250 is the new redesigned power solution, moving away from the separate power brick it’s nice to see a small transformer taking over the role, hopefully we will see this across all the upcoming routers from NETGEAR.

If you’re looking to see top performance from Wireless AC you’ll have to look at PCIe cards to max out the router, with USB adapters currently still limited to 867Mbps. Of course these speeds are all raw throughput and even with clear line of sight at a short distance our USB adapter would only connect at a rate of 433Mbps with 100% signal, when moving to a more real-world distance of 20ft upstairs, signal dropped to 50% and we connected at a rate of 234Mbps. Still far higher than achievable with Wireless-N in the same conditions, but very much shy of Gigabit Wi-Fi.

Overall the R6250 performs well, with good reception. With strong build quality and a price of around £130 this offers a decent saving over higher spec routers. A sound investment for your introduction to Wireless AC. To add to the value NETGEAR off free technical phone support for 90 days from purchase as well as a standard one year warranty.
