Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 Ti GHz Edition (OC Windforce 3) Graphics Card Review

Yesterday we took a look at a recent addition to the high end of the GPU market, a custom design overclocked AMD Radeon R9 290X. It went head to head with the similarly priced GeForce GTX in a selection of the latest games. Today we update that comparison with Gigabytes new GTX 780 Ti in its overclocked form. What does the extra price bump get us? Let’s find out!

The Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 Ti GHz Edition

Our 780 Ti sample arrived in a plain box with no bundled items however the retail packaging is shown above. For those buying in retail expect to receive a bundle containing power cables, documentation and a software CD. In addition to this NVIDIA also bundle Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag.

Upon unboxing the Gigabyte GTX 780 Ti it is clear that it is significantly different to the reference design when it comes to cooling. Rather than the single fan cooler used by Nvidia we have a triple fan solution, called Windforce 3, which is designed to cool GPUs up to 450w. With a metal shroud and dual slot design it remains compact and durable with an impressive set of six copper heatpipes running through the aluminium fins (2x8mm, 4x6mm). Underneath the cooler however we have the updated Ti PCB and latest revision of the GK110 GPU (Kepler). We also retain the dual SLI connectors along the top edge of the card and note that Gigabyte install a metal backplate on the card for added stability.

Gigabyte bump the power inputs up to 2x 8-pin on their overclocked card which assist the PCIe slot in providing the cards 250w+ of power. For card outputs Gigabyte use the NVIDIA standard configuration of DisplayPort, HDMI and two DVIs. The HDMI is gold plated and the four connectors allow us to connect display configurations such as 3x1080p screens for 5760×1080 Surround gaming and with a fourth display then used for other software such as messaging, email, etc.

So looking at the GPU, like GTX 780 and Titan the 780 Ti features the 28nm GK110 core with this model running at 1085MHz base, boosting up to 1150MHz. Memory runs at 1750MHz (7000MHz) and there is 3GB of Hynix chips present, connected to a 384-bit bus. For the CUDA cores the Ti has 2880 (5 Graphics Processing Clusters, 15 Streaming Multiprocessors) and also present are 240 texture units and 48 ROPs. PCIe 3.0, DirectX 11 and DirectCompute are all supported on this card as is acceleration of high definition content and the card can output audio over HDMI and to 4k displays.

  1. It’s a great card for performance and some light future-proofing… At the cost of about $700 and tax… that is hard money to justify, unless you know you will not regret it. Again, the price is probably the only ‘con’ but at the same time, it is difficult to justify the high price as a con, when this is a company’s flagship device we are talking about. If anything, I am just glad it didn’t start at a price much closer to the Titan (for how it performs, compared to the GTX 780)… that is just $300 dollars way north of the 780 Ti (or $600 if its SLI).

Hard to go wrong with one of these.
