Announced for release in 2015 at the company’s E3 press conference this week, the PS4 game stars an older Nathan Drake who has been out of the game for several years.
Forced back into the world of thieves, Drake sets out on a globetrotting adventure in pursuit of a historical conspiracy behind a fabled pirate treasure.
In the video interview, Naughty Dog game director Bruce Straley and creative director Neil Druckmann discuss how they plan to fuse the epic set pieces the series is know for with the more intimate character moments found in the studio’s most recent release, The Last of Us.
Druckmann says: “On Uncharted 2: Among Thieves we just started figuring out the set pieces on the [analogue] stick, so you’re playing through a collapsing building or a sliding platform or fighting a helicopter. And then, moving on to The Last of Us, we were concerned with how we took those set pieces and made them more intimate, made them parallel the story and the character arcs. So now, coming back to Uncharted, we can go epic again but we’re challenging ourselves again to mirror the character arcs.
“Our motto on Uncharted 2 was keep it core no matter how big the set piece gets. Keep it on the control stick, keep the core systems. So taking that into Uncharted 4, knowing that we want to keep it core, how do we expand the core move set? How do we build more systems that will give the player more options, more ways to approach exploration, traversal or combat? You’re going to have more ways to attack those things.”
