Roccat Kave XTD Review

Roccat Kave XTD Review

We have been long time fans of Roccat mice here at HardwareHeaven, with our experience peaking at the Kone XTD, a near flawless mouse. Great looks, exceptional performance/quality and feature packed software earned it a gold award. The likes of the Ryos MK Pro keyboard also impressed at launch and we were keen to see the latest Kave XTD headset when Roccat launched it back in September. So it was a nice surprise when one arrived with the Tyon mouse review sample a few weeks ago. Welcome to our Roccat Kave XTD Review.

Roccat Kave XTD Review – Packaging and Bundle

The Kave XTD arrives in some fairly standard Roccat packaging. We like its no frills approach which allows us to see the key features on the front as well as a nice clear view of the headset itself. Inside the no-frills approach continues with the bundle which consists of a quick installation guide.

Shown above is the Kave XTD, the stereo version. Roccat also offer a USB based 5.1 version and a military branded alternate option. Ours is the “normal” black edition which uses a mix of matt, soft touch coating and gloss finish. There is minimal blue branding on each side of the headset and our ear cups and headband have foam padding with fabric cover while the cable which exits the headset is rubberised. In terms of weight, the Kave XTD is 305gr (headset only).

Help Me Write A College Application Essay For specifications we have 2x50mm drivers (Neodymium magnet) and the headset is rated for 20-20,000Hz. The max SPL at 1kHz is 115dB (+/-2) and we have a  maximum input power of 400mW with impedance of 32Ohm. Our microphone (which is detachable, just pull it off) is an omni-directional noise cancelling model which has a 4×1.5mm driver diameter. The frequency response is 10-10,000Hz and sensitivity at 1kHz is -32dB (again +/-2dB). Our signal to noise ratio at 1Khz is 50dB and we have impedance of 2.2kOhm.

Turning to the top of the headset we find the Roccat branding etched in, nice and discrete. Then moving down the arms we find two extendable sections with eight lengths, all marked, available.

Looking down the 2.5mm cable, about 40cm along, we find a control pod. It features a clip on the back to secure to our clothing and on one side is a volume dial, on the other a mic mute button. Finally we end with two 3.5mm connectors for our soundcard.

Roccat Kave XTD Review – User Experience and Conclusion

Pay Someone To Do My Assignment Starting with the build quality of the Kone XTD we have a headset which very much impresses. If we were to be super picky having some metal extenders on the arms would maybe be nice but the plastic used here does feel durable. The soft touch coating feels great and we very much like the minimal branding along with blue highlights on each cup and the cable. The fabric used on the ear-cups and headband is noticeably softer than some competing headsets and the foam offers enough resistance to clamp the headset tight on our head. Having a removable mic is always a bonus for those who might want to wear the headset out and about, maybe with their smartphone, but we would change a couple of things. Firstly, it would be great to have the mic mute by pushing to a vertical position. It is much easier than fumbling for the control pod. Secondly, for the same reason we would move the volume control to the ear cup. At least one competitor offers both of those design aspects and they work very well indeed. Of course there would need to be some extra thought about how to keep the mic removable, and allow vertical mute… but it is do-able.

Setup? Well that couldn’t be simpler. Plug it in and we are good to go… so what about performance? Overall very, very good indeed. The only issue of note, and it is minor, is that this isn’t a headset which contains the sound well. It isn’t suitable for use around people who don’t like being disturbed. The mic is good enough for general use but as is often the case anyone serious about vocals for streaming or video creation will want to go for a stand alone model. For listening, first up we need to note that this is one of those rare gaming orientated headsets which offers decent quality for music. Often headsets tuned for gaming have harsh high end sounds or overpowering bass, the Kave XTD is much more well balanced. We get nice rich mid tones and detailed highs. If anything the out of the box experience could do with a very slight boost on the bass but that is purely down to personal taste. For movies, dialogue is nice and clear with soundtracks and effects produced well. Action movies were particularly impressive on this headset and that experience continued on into gaming. For more single player orientated games we were presented with excellent, well balanced sound. Moving into competitive FPS games, footfalls and environmental effects were clear and easy to follow. Team chat was easy to hear and gunfire produced with plenty of impact. There was also plenty of volume available to us from this headset, with minimal distortion at higher sound levels.

Summary:
Some very nice build quality, good design and well balanced sound wins the Kave XTD our performance award. An ideal companion for stand alone mic too.
