Uncharted 4 gameplay revealed in 15-minute video

Naughty Dog has finally revealed an expansive live gameplay demo of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End to kick off the PlayStation Experience event in Las Vegas.

And it looks, well, like an Uncharted game.

The demo begins a little underwhelmingly with a slightly older Nathan Drake (whose rounder face is beginning to look a bit like Martin Sheen) spelunking and mountain climbing. The platforming looks very scripted, surfaces crumble and Drake says “whoa” a lot. So far, so Uncharted.

But the second half of the demo is where things really get exciting. Once the combat begins it becomes apparent that Naughty Dog has drastically improved its enemy AI and level design. Stealth now plays a much bigger role as enemies will lose track of you as you play cat-and-mouse with them ala The Last of Us.

Drake also appears to automatically crouch when in foliage, much like Edward Kenway in Assassin’s Creed 4. While enemies can be evaded, they also behave more dynamically, where they’ll leap around ledges and scope out the terrain in a more realistic fashion.

You’re also now equipped with a grappling hook, which is kind of cool, but appears to only be usable in rare context-sensitive settings. In other words, it’s more Arkham Asylum than Bionic Commando.

The demo ends with Drake meeting up with a new character: his older brother. Apparently this newly introduced sibling is also a treasure hunter and has roped Nathan into this adventure. Brothers are good at that sort of thing
