Compare DirectX 12 Against Mantle API In The Updated 3DMark Suite


Recently, Microsoft showcased the effectiveness of DirectX 12 as an API during a media event. Using DirectX 12, developers managed to add a lot of complexity to a scene without compromising on frame rate. The comparison was made with DirectX 11, in the 3DMark demo.

Now, Futuremark announced that it will include this API Overhead Feature Test as part of the 3DMark Suite, which is available on Steam for $25. Using this benchmark, one can test the efficiency of Microsoft’s DirectX 12 versus their own DirectX 11 API, as well as AMD’s Mantle.


“The 3DMark API Overhead feature test is the world’s first independent test for comparing the performance of DirectX 12, Mantle, and DirectX 11. See how many draw calls your PC can handle with each API before the frame rate drops below 30 fps. ”

If an API has a lesser overhead, it is able to handle more draw calls. Basically, that API can help produce better graphics while keeping performance constant (or same). Microsoft is confident that their new DirectX 12 API is much better than AMD’s Mantle, which has already been implemented in a few games.

The updated 3DMark Suite will be available soon. Until then, here’s the benchmark video that was shown by Microsoft.
