Corsair H80i GT Review

A few weeks ago Corsair announced their new H110i GT CPU cooler and we found in our review that it performed exceptionally well. At the same time as that launch two other models were announced and today we have been testing one of those. Welcome to our Corsair H80i GT Review.

Corsair go with some pretty familiar package design on the H80i GT which covers a nice amount of feature info as well as giving a clear view of the cooler itself. Inside the product is suspended in cardboard and wrapped in polythene bags. The bundled items, which consist of mounts and a USB cable, are in their own bags and then we have two fans and a product manual. These fans are 12cm models with a rated RPM of 2435. Airflow is 70.69CFM with a static pressure of 4.65 mmH2O and noise level is rated at 37.7dB(A).

The main components of our cooler start with the aluminium finned radiator and this is a double width model which has dimensions of 154x123x49mm. Extending from it we have two tubes with braided finish and these lead to…

This led section can be manually set to a colour, or vary depending on the temperature. A USB port can be seen on the side of the block which allows us to monitor and control the cooler through software (more on that later) and also extending from it are two cables. One connects to our motherboard CPU fan header and the other connects to the coolers own fans. Flipping the block over we find that it has a copper base and that Corsair pre-apply their thermal paste to this at the factory.

Corsair H80i GT Review – Installation

Installation of the cooler on Socket 115x platforms begins with the addition of the bundled backplate. From there it matches the 2011 version shown above where we screw in four bolts around the CPU socket. We then place the CPU block on the processor and secure it in place with the bundled thumbscrews. On AMD we use their bundled backplate and instead change the mount on the CPU block to the alternate version provided. Next we install the first fan on the radiator and decide if we want to go with the second (more performance) or not (smaller size). We screw the radiator into a 12cm bay in our case and then connect the various cables to complete the install.

With the cooler installed (including the USB cable) we can then install Corsair Link which interacts with key components in our system such as the motherboard, as well as Corsair items like their PSUs and of course our cooler. It displays various voltage readings on items like PSUs, or fan speeds on our cooler and allows us to configure and monitor the system as we wish, including changing the settings for our CPU block LED.

Corsair H80i GT Review – Conclusion

Starting with the build quality of the H80i GT we have a product which hits the same high standards we recently saw on the H110i GT. A solid radiator construction, lovely braided tubing and a sleek CPU block which feels rugged… an aspect which has improved greatly over earlier Corsair coolers. In terms of design, there is plenty of compatibility offered by the H80i GT both in terms of CPU support and the compact (but double width) radiator. The cooler is also aesthetically pleasing thanks to the grey/silver branded sections and LED area which is a nice bonus and the installation is simple.

Professional Writers College Papers Installation of the cooler takes around 15 minutes, at most, and can really be explained at a basic level as some placement and the turning of 16 screws/bolts followed by plugging in some cables. The instructions are easy to follow and Corsair have a support forum for anyone who requires extra assistance. We still find Corsair Link a little clunky to configure however the base install/options are more than enough for basic users to monitor their system.

The H80i GT has a 5 year warranty and in terms of performance there was a lot to be happy about. At it standard settings our i7-5960X was kept at a very competitive temperature when compared to other liquid coolers. When we applied some extra voltage and an overclock this good performance continued and the H80i GT was able to match, or exceed the performance of the competition. That said, when things get demanding the H110i GT (which is a touch louder at maximum RPM) tends to knock a few extra degrees off the H80i GT performance.

Summary: A well built cooler which is easy to install and offers impressive performance.
