untitled

Apple and Samsung, the largest smartphone companies in the world, are reportedly in talks to launch electronic SIM cards along with the rest of the industry. Electronic SIMs will let consumers avoid being locked into a single operator and it would be possible to switch networks instantly. The GSMA, a mobile operator industry group, is close to announcing a new SIM that’ll be used by Apple and Samsung.

Networks will need to support the plans enabled by the electronic SIMs and there are some big operators already expected to support the plans. Those include AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Whampoa, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone.

The GSMA has publicly said an agreement on the technical architecture of the SIM has nearly been reached and delivery should occur next year. When specifically talking about Apple, the GSMA said it was, “continuing to work with Apple to secure their support for the initiative. While we are optimistic, a formal agreement with them is still in progress.”
