Apple unveils 12.9″ iPad Pro with Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil accessories

After years of rumors and speculation, Apple on Wednesday finally unveiled its jumbo-sized iPad Pro, boasting a 12.9-inch display, a new desktop-class A9X chip, a four-speaker audio system, a stylus dubbed the Apple Pencil, and an all-new Smart Keyboard that connects via a new smart connector.

The iPad Pro’s larger screen is large enough to run full-size iPad Air apps with space side by side. It boasts 5.6 million pixels, which is even more pixels than 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display.

The larger screen also allows for a full-size software keyboard, with will make typing easier. The iPad Pro also takes advantage of new features in iOS 9, including side view, picture in picture, and multitasking.

The device features an A9X chip that Apple claims is 1.5 times faster than a comparable desktop chip. Graphics performance is also two times faster than the A8X found in the iPad Air 2. Apple says the iPad Pro is faster than 80 percent of the portable PCs that shipped in the last 12 months.

Despite the performance improvements, Apple still boasts 10 hours of battery life on the iPad Pro, making it comparable to other iPad models.

With a new four-speaker stereo system, the iPad Pro dynamically adjusts sound based on the orientation the user is holding the device.

Its design is 6.9 millimeters thin, slightly thicker than the 6.1-millimeter iPad Air 2. The iPad Pro weighs 1.57 pounds, a hair heavier than the first-generation iPad’s 1.57-pound weight.

Apple will also offer a new Smart Keyboard designed specifically for the iPad Pro. Integrated into a Smart Cover, the keyboard will connect magnetically to the tablet via a new Smart Connector port that transfers both power and data.

The iPad Pro is also joined by a new accessory dubbed the Apple Pencil, which is capable of reading angles, pressure and more. In a video narrated by chief designer Jony Ive, the device was shown being used for writing and drawing in a variety of manners.

The Apple Pencil also includes a Lightning Connector that can be inserted into the iPad Pro, allowing the accessory to be recharged quickly on the go.

In Wednesday’s presentation, Apple invited Microsoft to the stage to show off some of its productivity apps, such as Office, and how they will work with the new iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. In an onstage demo, content was copied into a PowerPoint presentation.

In the demo, shapes were drawn in a PowerPoint via the Apple Pencil, and the app automatically converted the drawings into shapes. More than 20 different types of shapes will be supported in Office, Microsoft said.
