Amazon UK recalls Kindle Fire chargers over shock risks

Every so often we’ll hear about a recall for a gadget-related charger or power adapter. Following Apple and Microsoft, it’s Amazon’s turn to fess up in 2016 and ask that customers stop using a crucial part of their product. The company has sent an email to Brits explaining that “in rare cases” the adapter included with their Fire 7-inch or Kids Edition 7-inch tablet could cause electrical shocks. These occur when the component is pulled from the wall, causing the adapter assembly to “detach.”

The affected adapters have been sold in the UK and Ireland since September 2015. If you think you have one sitting in your home, Amazon recommends using the bundled USB cable with another compatible adapter until you can acquire a replacement. The company will swap the faulty version free of charge, or offer to put an extra £12 into your Amazon account so that you can buy a third-party model. It’s your choice.

The company stresses that power adapters shipped with its other tablets, such as the Fire HD and Fire HDX, aren’t affected. Furthermore, any hardware sold outside the UK should have a different adapter in the box.
