Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Slim Review 1TB

We like it when technology gets smaller, especially items that get taken on the move. For example the more recent Mac’s along with a bunch of Ultrabooks have resulted in a wide range of small, powerful and long lasting devices which really only skimp on storage. So for many users having an external drive of some sort is beneficial. Of course there is no point in having a compact laptop of your drive is a big brick which requires external power. Todays review product looks to stay well away from that sort of storage and aims to compliment our mobile lifestyle. Welcome to our Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Slim Review 1TB.

Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Slim Review 1TB – Packaging and Bundle

The Backup Plus Ultra Slim arrives in a fairly compact box which gives us plenty of product info along with a cut out to view the drive itself. Inside the device is suspended in a plastic case and bundled with it is some product documentation and a USB 3.0 cable.

Upon plugging in the drive we find that there is a setup file stored on it. We run that and our browser opens to reveal a registration page. Through this we can register for online storage (OneDrive 200GB and the Lyve mobile/desktop photo app) and download the Seagate Dashboard which allows us to backup data, including management of social media.

The Backup Plus Ultra Slim uses a plastic chassis which is split into two finishes. The top, a stylish dimpled metal effect with status LED in the corner. The base a matt finish with Seagate logo and product information sticker. A single connector, USB 3.0 is present and other than a Seagate logo on top it is a fairly plain design, available in platinum or gold.

As far as dimensions go, the Backup Plus Ultra Slim is 113,5 x 76 x 9,6 mm with 1TB and 2TB capacities available. Shown below we have the Ultra Slim compared to a fairly standard portable drive.

Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Slim Review 1TB – Performance and Conclusion

SeaUS

Starting with the build quality of the Backup Plus Ultra Slim we have a product which looks pretty cool. The metal effect top looks nice and while a real metal would have been great from a feel point of view, it is close enough in appearance to not look cheap or tacky. The overall chassis feels sturdy and while we are not fans of the USB 3.0 connector from a long term stability point of view, it is not Seagate’s problem, pretty much every USB 3 drive uses this connector.

The bundle provided by Seagate is good, both Lyve and OneDrive add decent value to the product and it is great to see that the 200GB cloud storage is available to existing OneDrive users, not just people creating a new account. The Seagate app also works well, simple and intuitive.

On the performance front, the drive is much faster than older USB 2.0 devices but it does suffer a little when compared to portable SSDs which tend to be about twice as fast. However they are also significantly more expensive and of course you’ll be hard pushed to find any 2Tb portable SSD…and definitiely not one for anything close to the RRP of the Ultra Slim.
