Apple ‘abandons’ QuickTime on Windows

Government health warning
Forget Flash, Apple’s QuickTime videoplayer is so insecure it should be deleted from any PC unfortunate to have it, the US government has warned.

The US government’s call to uninstall Apple QuickTime video player follows security software maker Trend Micro’s discovery of two new bugs in the software.

Trend Micro said it had uncovered two critical vulnerabilities in the version of the QuickTime media player for Windows operating system, which could be used to launch attacks on PCs if users visit a malicious web page or open a tainted file.

The warning does not apply to QuickTime for Apple’s Mac computers, but everyone knows they are totally secure anyway and it is only Microsoft which writes buggy software.

Apple knows QuickTime for the PC is pants and can’t be bothered fixing it. In fact it is phasing the software out rather than writing code which works. Trend Micro said that the bugs were so bad that they urged Windows users to immediately uninstall QuickTime because while the Apple software was on their machines they were always going to be at risk.

The Department of Homeland Security’s United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team, or US-CERT, said that the bugs put users at heightened risks from viruses and other security threats.
