New images show off BlackBerry’s upcoming Android phone

BlackBerry has yet to officially announce its upcoming and second Android-powered smartphone, but a product page for the device was accidentally published online and showed us some new images.

Known as the BlackBerry Neon, or DTEK50, this smartphone will come with a mix of some relatively midrange specs. Powered by a Snapdragon 617 processor and 3GB of RAM, the Neon will sport a 5.2-inch 1080p display, 16GB of internal storage (expandable up to 2TB with a built-in microSD slot) and a 13MP back camera combined with an 8MP front-facing camera for all you selfie lovers. A 2610mAh non-removable battery will provide the juice and while that may concern some of you, it should be noted that the Neon will support Quick Charge 2.0 (potential software optimizations and the lower resolution display should help extend battery life as well). To round this out, Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow will be present along with some BlackBerry software such as BBM, BlackBerry Hub, Blackberry Calendar, among others.

The images of the Neon show a pretty sleek device with rounded edges and what appears to be two front-facing speakers. Unfortunately there will be no USB Type-C support as the images clearly show a micro-USB slot on the bottom of the phone.

BlackBerry said last week it would be discussing new hardware soon, and while there is still no official announcement or release date, this site leak does show that the company is quickly gearing up for the launch of this phone. After the failed Priv, BlackBerry needs their second Android phone to be a hit and these specs indicate that the price tag may be kept relatively low to entice more buyers. We will keep an eye out for more information and will hopefully be hearing something official from BlackBerry soon.
