3dfx back ? Really? [UPDATE: end of joke]

3dfx Interactive, one of the most iconic GPU manufacturers in the market, might be making a comeback after a 20-year absence. Even the youngest have heard of the Voodoo series of graphics cards at some point in their young lives as 3dfx went out of business in the very early 2000s. In the aftermath, Nvidia took over virtually all of the Voodoo patents and trademarks.

Update 5/08/21: end of the joke. We laughed at first, with the sight of slides evoking a Voodoo card in PCI, then we cried with laughter when we discovered the official email @arcticmail.com. The story was definitely clarified late in the evening of 5/08 with an annotation on the header of the twitter account that left no room for doubt…

At this time, the twitter account is now suspended.. So it’s hard to imagine what 3dfx could do on the market. A complete mystery since the company does not appear anywhere and does not even have an official website. So it’s through a freshly activated Twitter account that we learn that a major announcement will be made on Thursday August 5th, next week. We will not speculate because there is nothing to make this return official for the moment. This uncertified Twitter account could be that of a fan or a troll wanting to have fun. Anyway, the “old” and nostalgic of those magic times of the Voodoo will keep an eye open on August 5th just in case…

3dfx voodoo

3dfx cards, especially the Voodoo and Voodoo 2 versions, were very popular with players during the 1990s. The brand was able to take advantage of a major change when no 3D acceleration solution existed and the market was huge. In the twilight of the 20th century, not anticipating the sudden acceleration of the market, 3dfx sank while Nvidia entered an era of success with its Geforce 2 and 3.
