4th Gen Haswell - Intel Core i7-4770K Review featuring the Gigabyte G1.Sniper 5 Motherboard

Intel Core i7-4770K (Haswell) and Gigabyte G1.Sniper 5 Review

For some time now Intel have been kings of the desktop market. Their processors such as the i7-3970X have gone unchallenged in the enthusiast market with AMD focusing on lower priced, mainstream to high(ish) end parts. The FX-8350 for example has some areas where it can compete reasonably well with Intels socket 1155 CPUs, such as the i7-3770K, where as in other tasks the AMD chip offers equivalent performance to the i5 series.

In a way this doesn’t help the industry, or consumers as the days of both manufacturers pushing each other to go faster, launch sooner are pretty much gone. That said Intel have done reasonably well at setting their own launch timeframes and a steady stream of new products has been forthcoming over the past few years.

Today it is time for a refresh of Intel’s desktop range of processors and the motherboards which house them as the product known as "Haswell" previously now becomes the likes of the Intel Core i7-4770K running on the Z87 platform. We will be taking a look at the new i7-4770K and combining it with Gigabytes new G1.Sniper 5 which is about as extreme a socket 1150 board as you will find at launch (including upgradable audio components on-board). These products will be put up against the previous generation Intel 3770K, enthusiast X79 system and the fastest AMD has to offer too in a selection of platform and gaming tests which include Crysis 3, Grid 2 and even a peek at the soon to be released PCMark 8.
