Playon!HD Mini 2 Media Player – GUI 2.0

Playon!HD devices have come a long way in terms of GUI since we first saw their players in May/June 2010 and with the Essential we hit version 2.0 of the interface. This new version was much more visually appealing and easier to use than the originals. The Mini 2 retains this GUI and tweaks it to add more functionality.

The main menu gives us links to the main media folders, file management, YAM Jukebox, Internet Media and device setup. There are also some summary sections such as whether a USB device is connected and a list of any recently added files.

Under "Setup" we find options which allow us to tailor the player to our needs. We can for example enable 1080p playback, choose the HDMI audio output format, connect to a network (Wi-Fi or cable) and upgrade the firmware/GUI from a USB device. Experience with previous Playon!HD devices tells us that these upgrades will be quick and simple with beta versions available on the AC Ryan forum for those who want more regular updates.

The File Manager screen lets us browse storage devices.

In the Music and Photo sections of the GUI we find, unsurprisingly, the audio and image files which are stored on connected devices. As is normal with devices such as the Mini 2 we can browse through thumbnails/folders and open the files we want by selecting them which opens the full screen player/viewer.

Movies works in a similar way to Music and Photo where we are given a set of thumbnails with file names and we can select the item we want to play using the remote. A list view can also be enabled and once selected the file opens in full screen mode at the setting chosen in our setup menu, for example 1080p 60Hz or 1080p 24Hz.
