Alder Lake-S 16 cores, 24 threads located

While we are waiting for the 11th generation of Intel CPUs, it seems that the 12th is starting to come around in the form of samples. For the record, this 12th generation, Alder Lake-S, will undoubtedly be a real breakthrough at Intel… And not only because it will no longer be in 14nm.

Intel Alder Lake-S: CPUs based on Golden Cove and Gracemont cores in 10nm.

The particularity of this new generation, with the exception that it will inaugurate 10nm for desktop CPUs at Intel, is to integrate a mix of Golden Cove and Gracemont cores on the same chip. This particular configuration allows to have 8 Golden Cove cores with 16 threads and 8 Gracemont cores with 8 threads. A new socket designed to last a long time? This design method, called “big.SMALL”, makes it possible to combine high-performance Golden Cove cores with much more efficient Atom (Gracemont) cores. These new processors should inaugurate a 1700 LGA socket with theoretical support for DDR5 and PCIE 5.0. We will insist on “theoretically” about DDR5 since other leaks indicate that this generation could accept DDR4 and DDR5 allowing a smooth transition.

The LGA1700 could be installed over time and accommodate at least 3 generations. Meteor Lake (2023) and Lunar Lake (2024) are thus potential candidates for the Socket 1700. Be careful however, even socket does not necessarily mean compatibility between cards / chipsets…

An Alder Lake-S on Geekbench

TUM_APISAK would have spotted a very early sample with relatively low clock speeds but many cores and threads. At this point, it is useless to speculate on the announced frequencies because if this sample exists, it is only in the early stages of testing. Alder Lake-S

Other information revealed by Geekbench is that the chip has 30 MB of L3 cache and 12.5 MB of L2 cache. The chip was tested on the internal Intel Alder Lake-S ADP-S DDR4 CRB platform which should be a 1700 LGA socket motherboard and was equipped with 16GB of memory, although we cannot confirm at this stage whether it was DDR4 or DDR5. The release date of this 12th generation seems to be still positioned on the end of the year 2021. A date which seems to us particularly optimistic at this time. However, we are looking forward to discovering this new architecture which marks a real breakthrough in the design of Intel’s CPUs.
