AMD launches RDNA2 mobile graphics cards

8 months after the launch of RDNA2 for desktops, AMD launches this time its range for laptops.

AMD targets the 3080 mobile with its RX 6800M

Following the anecdotal RX 5000M, whose best representative was the 5500M available on Apple computers, AMD launches today its RDNA2 architecture on mobiles with the RX 6000M. The will is clearly to compete with NVIDIA on the high end by directly attacking the RTX 3080M.

With RDNA2, AMD recalls having made a huge leap compared to RDNA, allowing to deliver up to 50% more performance or up to 43% lower power consumption than the previous generation. Thanks to this, the brand can offer high performance solutions on laptop competing with the top of the range of NVIDIA and their 3080M (based on the GA104 chip). Three GPUs are being launched today: The RX 6800M based on Navi 22, having 40 CU accompanied by 12 GB of GDDR6 and 96 MB ofInfinity cache and going up to 2300 MHz in frequencies. The TDP is announced at more than 145W. The RX 6700M alsobased on Navi 22, with 36 CU accompanied by 10 GB of GDDR6 and 80 MB ofInfinity cache, and a frequency up to 2300 MHz. The TDP is announced to go up to 135W. Finally, the RX 6600M is based on Navi 23 and has 28 CU accompanied by 8 GB of GDDR6 and 32 MB ofInfinity cache. The card will go up to 2177 MHz in frequency and will have a TDP up to 100W. RX 6800M benchmark

On the benchmarks side, AMD boasts to be ahead of NVIDIA’s RTX 3070 and 3080 (in games favoring the red architecture). To get a more precise idea, we will have to wait for independent tests of laptops equipped with these new GPUs. So, after coming back to the very high end of the desktop market, AMD should also come back to the laptop market, coupling their Zen 3 processors and RDNA2 graphics card. We will now have to see how the manufacturers propose this CPU/GPU couple and especially if AMD is able to supply them.
