AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition (XT2) Graphics Card Review

Back in December we saw AMD launch their Graphics Core Next architecture with the release of the Radeon HD 7970. At the time it was the fastest single GPU board available and had no trouble beating the fastest NVIDIA model, or the last generation of AMD products. Since then we have seen AMDs partners take the GPU to new heights with their own custom models and the GPU architecture hit new price points with lower specification models such as the 7870.

Also introduced since the release of the 7970 was AMDs GHz Edition branding, models which ran at over 1GHz even at reference level but one thing has complicated the life of the 7970 more recently and that was the launch of the GTX 680. With that product NVIDIA were able to compete well with AMD and so a response was needed, that comes in the form of the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition.

With a refined manufacturing process and a tweaked firmware/bios AMD are today launching a revised 7970 known as the GHz Edition, or XT2. We will be comparing that card to an overclocked, custom design GTX 680 and will dispense with the niceties, clocking our i7-3960X CPU at 5.0GHz and firing the resolution up as high as 5760×1080. Which card will come out on top in games such as Max Payne 3, Battlefield 3 and Diablo 3? Let’s find out… but before we do, a quick look at the reference card…
