AMD RX 5000 series: a little performance boost?

The latest AMD driver would give a boost to the “old” Radeon RX 5000 by making them eligible for “Smart Access Memory” (SAM) technology.

AMD Smart Access Memory So beware, you’ll need to meet certain constraints like having the right processor and a supported motherboard chipset. In fact, the candidates are: either a 10th or 11th generation Intel Core processor on a 400 or 500 series motherboard, or a Ryzen 3000 or 5000 series on a 400 or 500 series motherboard. Of course, the whole family will have to be running on a freshly updated bios. Support for SAM (or Resizable Bar) technology was previously limited to the Radeon RX 6000 series and the GeForce RTX 3000 series from Nvidia. In AMD’s ideal world, this feature can improve performance by up to 15% in certain games.

However, the performance gain remains very random. There may be some gains on games originally designed for consoles, which have to constantly load and unload elements in the GPU memory due to the RAM limitation of consoles. Depending on the resolution and texture, high-end PC GPUs can clearly handle more, but games are generally not modified to take advantage of this when ported to PC. For this reason, the performance improvement with SAM or Resizable Bar is uneven .  So this “free” upgrade to the RX 5000 will have to be tested on a daily basis, but it would obviously be a shame to do without it.
