Budget Graphics Card Roundup

XFX Nvidia 9600GSO 384MB

The XFX 9600GSO 384MB card is the only 9-series model in this roundup review. It is supplied in a fancy box, again with little information about the card itself. It has the best bundle on test today … as inside the box you will find a drivers CD, DVDs with the full version of the ‘Company of Heroes: Opposing fronts’ game, a fancy ‘Do not disturb’ door notice, a basic manual and quick installation guide, a mini-DIN to HDTV adapter, a mini-DIN cable, a dual Molex to 6-pin PCIe power adapter cable and two DVI to D-Sub adapters. There is no DVI to HDMI adapter included.

The XFX 9600GSO is built on a well made black PCB sporting all solid capacitors and a high quality copper cooler. The cooler is silent when in 2D mode, but becomes rather irritating when the card is running 3D applications. Based on the G92 core, the 9600GSO is essentially a new (and not very different) version of the 8800GS. It has 96 shader processors (9600GT has 64), however it is slightly hampered by the use of a 192-bit memory bus (9600 GT uses 256-bit). XFX did not follow Nvidia’s reference clocks of 550MHz core, 1600MHz memory and 1375MHz shader and have opted for 580MHz/1400MHz/1450MHz respectively.

This is the only card in our roundup which requires external power from a single 6-pin PCIe connector. It also has two dual link DVI ports, a mini din port and an SLI connector. Should you purchase a HDMI dongle the card is capable of outputting 1080p (and audio with the use of a SPDIF cable).
