Keep us posted, looking forward to seeing your thoughts.
Any news yet if any of the 6850s will include any game? (other than AvP)
Not that I have heard but i assume they will.
Hmm.. any idea which 6850 is the most silent? I know, it's overkill for a HTPC but I can't wait for a lower performing card to be released, I want that 3D support.
You cant go wrong with the Sapphire or Gigabyte really.
Well, I'm kind of bummed right now. I reported 24 hours ago that my order had arrived in Metro Atlanta at the main hub. For some reason it has sat there ALL DAY for close to 18 hours before moving along to the next hub. And, per the tracking system, it has been in transit to that next hub...15 miles away...for over 7 more hours! What I'm not sure about is whether this current hub is where the delivery truck will pick it up to deliver to my house or if it has yet to be sent to a hub closer to my house.
(Yes, I'm getting a bit impatient. :taste: )
EDIT: Hahaha! Just got the update I was hoping for.... "Out for Delivery"
let me know how it goes..
i haven't jumped for it yet because my sapphire active dp adapter has been giving me random greif recently and i'd love to move to a passive adapter to rid myself of these flickers occasionally and loss of signal (in which i have to pop the usb plug out and pop it back in for the active dp..)
Definitely will do, Judas!
The card just arrived at the door. I'm on my way out to Micro Center now to pick up the needed adapter. Will be doing some testing after I get home from work later tonight.
EDIT/UPDATE: Just got back with an AddLogix MiniDisplayPort ->DVI. At present, only two displays can be active at once. Trying to setup Eyefinity with this adapter only detects two displays. Will check on another adapter tomorrow...which is my day off.
Here are some test results comparing the XFX HD 5770 to the Gigabyte HD 6870:
These test results are from the very same system and using the exact same settings in the tests while using the cards' default timings. The only overclocking is on my CPU which is running at 3.6 GHz.
And, the settings in each benchmark were pushed to the highest possible settings...even to Extreme where possible.
Both cards were using the latest Catalyst 10.10 Hotfix drivers.
I have some other results that I need to spend more time uploading, but these should give some indication as to the difference in performance between the two cards.

FAR CRY 2 Benchmark:
this appears to fly in the face of what was stated...
still only allows you to setup the 2x dvi's then with passive dp adapters.
So far, this seems to be the situation on my end. I took the passive adapter back and spent about 45 minutes with one sales rep at the store looking for a proper adapter.
In the absence of a proper adapter, I returned home with a Mini-DisplayPort -> VGA adapter and am having fits getting the proper resolution on that display. I've actually had CCC detect the three monitors but, when clicking to Apply, only two monitors become active and, if one of those two is the VGA monitor, the resolution gets kicked down to 1024x768.
Will keep you posted on further developments.
EDIT: I FINALLY succeeded in getting the correct monitor detected on the DisplayPort connected monitor. It kept coming up as a PnP monitor previously. Will see if there's any improvement with other settings now.
EDIT2: I think I'm done tinkering for now. Cannot get a proper Eyefinity setup with what I have here now.
Sounds like similare symptoms i was experiencing with about 20+ passive adapters i was toying with when i had the 5770's....
Sounds like a Active dp adapter is still a requirement.
Since my last post I've toyed more with it. It seems that, as long as there are only two displays active, this passive adapter will allow the display to run at 1920x1080. But, if I even try to enable 3 monitors in Extended mode at all, this one gets reduced to 640x480.
So, yes, I'm of the same opinion at this time as you: It seems an active adapter is required to make it work.
Judas, in your testing, did you ever try one of these:
ATI Eyefinity Active DP Adapter Review - Page 1 - Introduction
Hey guys, seems I have been being a little thick about adapters. When talking about active adapters i was meaning USB powered, passive I was thinking of the new models which dont require power and cost approx $30.
SO... now that I have my brain turned on...
6870/6850 + Original Adapter with USB = 3screens fine
6870/6850 + New compact $30 adapter without USB = 3 screens fine
6870/6850 + Low cost adapter = 2 screens. (I would actually call this a passthrough adapter rather than passive so I apologise for the confusion there.)
dyre i have used 2 different brands of adapters that look quite like that...
didn't work.. same results..
the adapters i have run .. run between $10 and $45... the most expensive ones were the running in the upper $90 range.. but still produced the same results as the $10 adapter.
In the end the only thing to work for me was the Sapphire Adapter with the USB power... and even then... after about 6 months the adapter started just being irratic...
If it helps, here are the two that AMD sent me... Weison branded so if you can find them hopefully the results will be better for you.
Edit, links to buy are here: http://support.amd.com/us/eyefinity/Pages/eyefinity-dongles.aspx
This is the shop you will end up at, after the list of validated dongles. http://www.cableclub.com/mini-displayport-adapter-c-667.html
I just ordered this one from Amazon.... Using the Super Saver option there's no shipping charge. Just have to be patient for it to arrive some time next week.

EDIT: BTW, has anyone else noticed how much more vibrant the colors are with the new HD 6870? At least they are on my monitors. I'd say the colors are almost "radiant."
Honestly! I don't know why but the colors are much richer on my monitor now. It's something I noticed immediately after getting the new card installed.
thats pretty interesting.... maybe someone else can confirm.... sounds good...
