Intel Core i7-4770K and GIGABYTE G1.Sniper 5 Motherboard Review

"We will be taking a look at the new i7-4770K and combining it with Gigabytes new G1.Sniper 5 which is about as extreme a socket 1150 board as you will find at launch (including upgradable audio components on-board). These products will be put up against the previous generation i7-3770K, enthusiast X79 system and the fastest AMD has to offer too in a selection of platform and gaming tests which include Crysis 3, Grid 2 and even a peek at the soon to be released PCMark 8."

    Great review.
Wondering in testing how it does vs a 3770k @ 4.5GHz vs Stock 4770k.

I'd guess the 3770 would win that comparison.

a delided IB chip will outperform Haswell non-delided chip when it's all said and done.
other sites couldn't even get Haswell to clock to 5.4GHz and some couldn't get it to 5.0GHz if you go back and read all the reviews.
and then the higher temps to go with it.

not sure if the slightly higher IPC can offset the (in-general) lower overclocking headroom.

    edit:
is the new line of mobo's and features worth the jump if you have IB or nicely clock SB chip.?
    I say no..

    Veridian3 and craig5320

on a side note I spend lots of time on other forums mainly OCN.
hardly anyone mentions or even knows about HH over there.
there was a thread that came out today with all the Haswell reviews but they didn't have yours (HH).

so I linked it to that thread and people gave me bonus points for finding it...
so more or better marketing is what HH needs.
    I do what I can..

    just my opinions.
    cheers..

Can non-K Haswells be overclocked with the baseclock straps (like the i7-3820 can), or was that just a silly rumour?

no, non K models chips with Haswell will not be BLK overclock-able.
all that has indeed been disabled by Intel this time.

    really sucks.

How come nobody verifies what size the barbs are on this board, anyone?

I don't think any reviewer really expect people to use that water cooling option. It's a gimmick.
I checked the Gigabyte website and the manual by the way, and they don't say there either. Seems they too consider it a gimmick. ;)

Shame. I miss the days of overclockable Intel budget CPUs. I had several, and I would consider buying a brand new chip for myself for the first time in 6 years if they made a return.

They did do an unlocked socket 1156 dual-core, but with the IPC difference, they're not worth it anymore (unless you can get one much cheaper than a modern i3, obviously).

Every other site I've seen is bitching about how poorly this overclocks. You did something amazing here (as usual)....love it!

H OCP is saying that only 30% are going beyond 4.6GHz overclock...!
and the heat is on par to actually slightly higher than Ivy as well.
also seems to have a spike point for the ones that do overclock, example 4.6GHz might take 1.25V but 4.7GHz might take 1.36V..
this is some amazing, non-amazing crappola to me.

best thing going right now is a delidded 3770K.
