Before pulling out the HD 6950, I ran a few benchmarks. None of these is the result of any special tweaking, overclocking, or other changes made in any attempt to skew the results.

Both cards are using the 13.2 BETA7 Drivers released recently. Prior to installing the HD 7970, I completely uninstalled CCC, all its components and then went into Device Manager and removed the HD 6950 and the VGA compatible drivers so that the HD 7970 would prompt for any newer VGA compatible drivers needed...if so.

First, here's a look at the Performance settings in CCC for the HD 7970. (Essentially, the same as what I used for the HD 6950.)

That is awesome! Big difference between the two cards!

One thing I noticed here though was in the Valley test. Any idea why the 6950 had a much higher minimum FPS as opposed to the 7970? The older 6950 has double the frames at its lowest compared to that of the 7970 at its lowest.

yeah was looking at it too.

What's also interesting is how the first 2 tests of the 3DMark show rather little difference.. meanwhile the last one firestrike shows basically a doubling of performance.

I know my 6950 @ 6970 2GB running @ 1920x1200 is a total slideshow. And When i ran it at 3240x1920 it was spitting out less than 1fps.

I've love to get my hands on another 7970 again.. but i'm going to be patient this time and not jump the gun. I was planning on moving from the tri 5770 1GB to the 7xxx series 3GB models when they arrived.. but when skyrim was driving me crazy with lack of crossfire support at high resolutions, i managed to get rid of all 3 of the 5770's and get the 6950 for a good price.

If someone comes along and wants the 6950.... i'll probably just suffer on the 6850 i've got stuffed into the one computer i've got here at the store until the 8xxx arrive hopefully in the next 3 months.

yeah i know... expected release period of the HD8000 series that AREN'T rebadged HD5xxx/7xxx (apparently a lot of the igpu laptop parts are using the HD5450 just with a HD8xxx series due to OEM requirements to make them look "newer"... bullshit as it may.. not entirely AMD's fault)

looks like it may be either late summer or sometime in fall even.

    RE: The lower minimum FPS:

I did notice during one short period of the test there was some "halting/hitching/stuttering" going on when the scene was moving from side to side. Subsequent runs didn't produce this and should provide a better indication of what the card actually can do.

I'll post a couple more run results after I get home tonight. That particular test was the very first one I did.

Some updated Heaven 4.0 Benchmarks. These two results are with the card OC'd: 980/1430. So far, the card's temperature hasn't exceeded 63C during any of the tests. I have the fan manually set at 60%.

The first result is simply at HIGH settings....

This second result is the same but with 8xAA...

How loud is the fan at 60%? My current card has an efficient cooler, but 60% is beyond takeoff speed.

I'll have to ask someone who isn't deaf. :D

However, be that as it may, I do pick up the noise of fans and especially if there's any vibration going on. The particular PC case I'm using has two 25Cm fans in the side cover as well as other cooling fans in the case, one on the PSU, and a CoolerMaster Hyper N520 on the CPU. With all the fans running there's barely any vibration at all. And, the case sits on my desk...not on the floor...so I would pick up any unusual vibration. Being that I am clinically deaf, I'm very, very sensitive to vibrations.

So, with that all in mind, there's nothing going on here that is anything for me to be concerned about.

On top of that, if my older son comes in and something is too noisy, he's very quick to point it out to me. So far, he's not said anything at all.

Overclocking the card some more. It's presently at 1015/1505. And, under load, the temps don't ever go over 64C. (Fan set at 60%.)

The Heaven 4.0 test has been set to ULTRA, and all other settings at the highest available...

I've actually been building two different systems over the past week. One for myself and then re-building/configuring my previous system for my younger son.

So, I'm still at the very beginning of getting my new system back into a "working" situation with all my programs/games/and such.

It is completely Windows Updated and I've been able to run the benchmarks that I've posted.

Then, I was able to get Steam working again and played a bit of Skyrim last night before going to bed. I cranked it all the way up to ULTRA settings and it never missed a beat.

All that said, I really can only say, "Stay Tuned...."

Several tests have been run at GPU Clock: 1010; Memory: 1510. Temperature hasn't exceeded 71 C in any of the tests so far.

EDIT: Here are some results with settings at 1025/1510:
