Can't remember exactly, but I remember people mentioning weird issues with MS's latest and greatest.

Tbh since Windows 8 MS has just gone nowhere but downhill, if the next iteration uses the same Metro shite i'll just carry on running 7 till support ends or hope Linux support for steam gets a lot better

I've often been tempted by those setups when they fly past for low prices on eBay. I'd be interested to see how it compares in games (with a modern graphics card) to current gen hyperthreaded duals, quads, and hyperthreaded quads. Quite a few games are still sadly pretty poorly optimised for >2 cores.

Well as soon as I get my PCI-Ex 8x ~> 16x slot riser card, and i'm able to successfully disable the ATI ES1000 onboard 16mb adapter, then all I really need to do is drop a sound card in there and then crank up the ram capacity...

I'll likely move my 6970 2GB into the rig (if i'm able to get the power requirements sorted) so i'll be able to test it... otherwise i'm likely going to stick a 7750 or equivalent R7 model card.

Well I said fuck it to the 8x slot to 16x riser adapter.. .cause I plan or hope to be able to use a full blown dedicated gpu.... but for now I managed to take a soldering iron and melt out of the back of the 8x slot luckily not hurting it or the electrical pins or the board in the process...... it was a stressful few minutes.

    anywho...

slapped my test gpu in and the server surprisingly disabled the embedded graphics automatically and then reported the detection of an unknown GPU to the rest of the system ALONGSIDE the HDMI multimedia adapter.

Booted straight away into windows... 14.3 betas installed and the HD5450 512mb XFX gpu is chewing some nice figured...

Now if I can get a HD7750 or R5/R7 equivalent to boot that would be fantastic...

i'm in the process of procuring the necessary poweredge 2900 series hot swap drive bays so that I can start packing this server with some serious hardrive space...

    initially i'll start slowly....

Initial benchmarks simply show about half the overall performance of my 3930k which would put it about in line with the 3770/4770k which is actually pretty damn good I'd say for some of the tests... others are clearly not as good.... even with quad channel memory, it's just not as high as what DDR3 dual channel can obtain.. but close....

If I can get the pci-ex 6pin adapter made and working without frying the backplane, I think a R7 260x or even 270... perhaps even something more powerful that uses a single pci-ex 6 pin connector could be used .... and it'd sail along well.

I can't use the SAS drive in another non sas system.... BUT I can use a SATA drive on SAS controller just fine....
