(As I posted already in this thread, but, I need your attention. )

I have just received this email with updated....and very alarming....news!

"Things are not really good, we have been in the hospital for two weeks already fighting the infection. With the infection, the risks related to bone marrow transplant, are deadly. They cannot fight it with antibiotics and will perform a surgery removing one or two teeth and possibly some soft tissue of the gum, I pray to God they will not have to go to her sinus which is also under question. In addition to that, her recent blood test showed leukemia cells which means that the last chemo produced no effect. This leaves very few chances but we must hope.Sasha is asleep or napping half of the time since they give her so many drugs, and is weak and tired and passive, not herself at all. Does not eat as you understand. We try to drag her out of bed for a short walk in the hallway. Tonight they transfused white blood cells from a donor, thank God there was not rejection. They will do this for two weeks to boost her ability to fight the infection.
    Love, B."

Please offer up some positive thoughts and prayers for this little girl. She needs all the strength we can send her way.

    This just arrived:

"Let it be said that your thoughts and prayers have done a Good Thing! I just got off the phone with Bella and the blood tests last night that showed a return of the blast cells were WRONG! It was her own white cells replicating madly and looking like blasts. The doctors yesterday actually told Julia and Bella to take Sasha home and "keep her comfortable." The last chemo she had was the strongest thing a child can tolerate, so basically they were saying there was nothing more they could do. Talk about the lowest low...

So now they are talking about just trying to go ahead with the marrow transplant ASAAP. Her good-match donor is now "not available" so her parents will have to do, even though neither is as good a match. But they will be growing things and doing things to try to make the odds of rejection as low as possible. First Sasha must get over this infection that has plagued her for 2-3 weeks, and this afternoon she had surgery for a fungal infection that had invaded her gums (these chemos are really rough.) Her dad just flew in from Khazakstan today and we can only hope this is all going to work out.

Bella says "thank you" to all of you have been praying for Sasha. She does not need anything else and is very listless and tired right now, but please just keep up those postive thoughts and I promise to let you know how she is doing.

With a hallelujah and sigh of relief that there is yet hope....

I just now received this email update:

"Just got off the phone with Bella. Things are BAD. They let Sasha
come home on Weds but she spent all day yesterday and today with
Julia in the clinic getting transfusions. The transplant is now quite
iffy. The doctors pretty much told Bella that there would be no
point unless all the blast cells went away and her blood cleared up.
Julia is still willing to try anything. B says Sasha is so fragile
and miserable-looking we wouldn't know her, with swollen belly from
the liver and spleen no hair, etc. It does not look promising.
    Please keep saying LOUD prayers.

I' send out my best wishes to her, and hope that she overcomes her hardships.

These type of things truly sadden me, for someone so young :tears:

I just received this newest update this morning, March 15, 2004:

"I just got this link in a note this AM.

    http://www.caringbridge.org/tx/sashadvorak

Yesterday she cried during breakfast (yes, she ate something. That alone is miraculous news!) When Bella asked why, she said, "Because so many people are being so nice to me." The local Bike club had a ride for her earlier. It is an annual event that ironically benefits Texas Children's Hospital and leukemia victims. Sasha said "They always have Ride for Kids but this year it was Ride for a Kid - and the kid is me."

The picture link is working; today is the first entry in the saga.

    Thanks so much for caring!!
