What is HBAO and SSAO in games

    Hi guys.I just want to know that what is HBAO in games like bad company 2 and SSAO in games like HAWX 2. Are they put serious load on GPU ?

    HBAO stands for Image-Space Horizon-Based Ambient Occlusion
    SSAO stands for Screen-Space Ambient Occlusion

    HBAO is an improved method of AO compared to SSAO. AO is a "trick" that will accentuate the perception of depth for the objects rendered in a scene by applying a shadow effect in key areas on the object itself and on the immediate surrounding area. It looks at the geometry and also at the way bump-mapping is applied to flat textured surfaces.

    As a side note, bump-mapping is also used by the tessellation process in a similar manner. In a way, Ambient Occlusion is the poor man's Tessellation since it doesn't require a DX11 card and the performance cost is very small by comparison.

    Hi, may I just say that this is going to be closed for two reasons.

    A) I have removed the link as I see it as site pimping... There were nothing added that has already been mentioned.
    B) Any thread that is older than a set time (Unless it is Important) then a thread stays open. But as this is 7 year old and the OP Ishank has not been seen here since 2013 makes this a pointless resurrection..
