Cougar 200M Review Featuring 200K

Cougar 200M Review Featuring 200K

Cougar may not be the most well known name in the gaming peripherals marketplace however they are fast gaining traction thanks to some well designed, high specification products. In our previous reviews we have been very impressed by pretty much every aspect of their mice and keyboards but, that could be a lot harder for them to achieve today as the products we are reviewing are from their budget range where balancing features, build quality and performance are much harder. This is our Cougar 200M Review Featuring 200K (Mouse and Keyboard).

Cougar 200M Review Featuring 200K – Packaging and Bundle

Starting with the packaging for the 200M and 200K we have a pretty standard affair. The  boxes give us a nice clear image of the products as well as listing key features and information. Inside it is a no-frills approach to the bundle. A set of product documentation for each device.

Cougar 200M Review Featuring 200K – The 200M

Looking at the 200M, we see that Cougar have gone with a simple but stylish design. Each surface on the top and sides has a soft touch coating and the scroll wheel and palm logo both light up in orange. The main gaming buttons use Omron switches and the scroll wheel is both clickable and ridged to provide grip. Also present is a DPI button which allows us to cycle through three pre-set profiles on the fly (800, 1600, 2000dpi).

For dimensions the mouse measures 120x74x41mm and it weighs 110g.

Turning round to the left view we see that the orange thumb area has cut aways with the thumb buttons positioned above. These are set to back and forward. The right side of the mouse has a similar appearance however has no buttons present. A model with black side panels is also available.

On the base of the 200M are three low friction feet and then in the centre is our optical sensor. This is a 2000 dpi sensor and the mouse offers 125Hz/8ms polling. Extending from the centre of the front surface is a 1.5m braided cable which ends in a gold plated connector.

Another product in Cougars 200 series is their 200K keyboard. This board is very much aimed at entry level gamers who want low profile buttons on their board. It uses scissor switches and 19 of the key buttons used by gamers have anti-ghosting capability. Like the mouse, there is no software available for the 200K, everything is handled from the board itself, usually with the Fn button. It allows us to perform tasks such as changing the LEDs (Breathing, 7 colours), switch our WASD and arrow keys, Windows Key lock, media functions and repeat rate acceleration.

As the images above show, this is a fairly compact board, especially in height, and while it uses a plastic chassis Cougar note that it has a steel plate inside for added stability/durability. The base of the keyboard has multiple rubber feet to ensure it stays steady on our desk and the two legs at the back allow an extra tilt. Also worthy of note is that it has a rubberised 1.6m cable which ends in a silver USB connector.

The 200K measures 165x450x23mm and weighs 870g.

Cougar 200M Review Featuring 200K – User Experience and Conclusion

When creating budget peripherals there are so many ways that a manufacturer can try to balance their design, features, performance and quality. In the case of the 200M and 200K we feel that Cougar were right to start their process with the removal of software support. These are plug and play devices with everything handled on-board. That works well on the 200K which due to more buttons has notable control over key features however on the 200M we would have likes an option to alter the DPI options… having said that, this wouldn’t be an issue if the pre-sets were a little more spread out. Maybe 400/1200/2000 rather than 800/1600/2000.

Other than that, and looking at the 200M specifically we feel Cougar have got the balance pretty much right. The mouse feels much higher quality in the hand than the value price would suggest and the presence of a braided cable, gold plated USB, LEDs and Omron switches is great. Two thumb buttons is an added bonus and the mouse really does track well, with that soft touch coating and low friction base offering a nice experience in longer gaming sessions.

The 200K feels much more like a value product and will very much split opinion. you either like low profile scissor keys or you dont. If you are in the “like” camp then the 200K offers some decent features for an entry level board. A surprising amount of backlighting, key media and gaming features (WASD swapping, Windows key lock) and it feels sturdy on the desk. Its a shame this doesn’t match the braided cable, gold USB of the 200M but that isn’t in any way a deal breaker.

Summary: As far as entry level gaming products go, Cougar have done fairly well at providing interesting options for gamers on a budget. The 200M stands out as being a product with high build quality for this area of the market with the 200K offering some nice extra features for its product type.
