Cougar 600K Review

Cougar 600K Review

Over the past year we have reviewed a number of products from Cougar, some value packed and others aiming at enthusiasts. Each time there has been something to like about the item and more often than not we have left very impressed. Today we get to see another higher end keyboard, though this time with no frills, in our Cougar 600K Review.

Cougar 600K Review – Packaging and Bundle

Cougar give us a nice clear image of the keyboard on the box, as well as listing some of the key features. Inside the keyboard is protected by foam with the bundled items below. Those bundled items are a set of stickers and some product documentation. Also present, and shown in its own compartment above, is a palm/wrist rest with removable texture panel that can be moved from side to side (Magnetic).

Cougar 600K Review – The Keyboard

The 600K is shown above and as can be clearly seen, it uses a black and silver design. That silver section is actually an aluminium frame and sitting upon it are our Cherry MX mechanical keys. Our sample has blue versions however the usual alternatives are available. Up at the top left of the board we have buttons which enable repeater functionality of 1x, 2x, 4x and 8x and all the functionality of the board is controlled  by a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0 CPU.

In terms of size the board is 230x467x40mm and it weighs 1.1KG.

Over on the right side of the board we find the LED switch, the WASD and Arrow keys are orange backlit, and the Windows Key lock button. Media functionality keys are up next and Cougar add further functionality through 2nd commands on keys. For example switching between 6-key and full N-Key rollover. Turning the board over we find that there are two legs which change the angle of the board as well as various rubber feet which keep the unit stable on our desk.

The final feature of note is that there is a USB passthrough port on the back of the board and this has its own USB connector. Both USB connectors are gold plated and sit at the end of a braided 1.8m cable.

Cougar 600K Review – User Experience and Conclusion

Starting with the build quality of the 600K we have a board which feels very solid. The aluminium frame helps with this but overall the main body of the board is chunky plastic which has minimal flex and a decent weight. The use of Cherry MX switches always guarantees quality and little touches such as the braided cable and gold connectors are nice bonuses.

Design wise we have no complaints. The layout of the board is good, the size pretty much perfect and the removable rest beneficial. The silver and black design is nice and the limited orange LEDs compliment this well. The location of the back port could maybe be better, or slightly easier to access rather than in a recess however this is really a nit pick more than anything else.

That brings us to the performance/use of the board and overall we were very impressed. The keys have the same old Cherry MX feel of quality, are very responsive and should be durable. The lack of software isn’t an issue for us, we get all the key features we need onboard. However some may miss the lack of macro and profile functionality. That said, buy the right motherboard and it will be bundled with that software anyway.

Summary: Good build quality, excellent typing experience and some nice extra features for gamers.
