Gaming Performance

GTA IV was tested at 1920×1080 using a GTX 275.  To demonstrate how the various CPUs impact our gaming experience we have set GTA4 to mid-high in game detail and then recorded both the average framerate and average CPU use throughout a section of gameplay.

While there wasn’t a huge difference in the average CPU usage of the four AMD processors, the models with more cores achieve much greater average FPS scores.  Both the Athlon II X2 255 and Phenom II X2 555 reached 100% CPU usage during the test which caused unplayable framerates on a couple of occasions.  The X3 and X4 Athlons didn’t suffer this problem, though.  The i3-530 performed reasonably well in this test; the average framerate was good considering it only has two cores.  Unlike the two dual core Athlons, the i3-530 didn’t even reach close to 100% CPU usage and game play was smooth throughout.
