Creative Draco Review – Packaging and Bundle

It would be fair to say that in a shelf full of headsets the Draco is likely to stand out from the competition… and who needs product info when the blurb on the back uses the term “Super Duper”… nice work Creative!. Lifting the flap on the box gives us a nice clear view of the headset and then inside we find a travel pouch, detachable microphone and for info we have included the main connectors above too, two gold plated 3.5mm connectors at the end of a red rubberized cable

Creative Draco Review – The HS880 Headset

The Draco HS880 is shown above and key to this products design are the fold flat ear cups which make it comfortable to hang around our neck as well as making the headset easy to transport (Weight 268g). On the outside of the ear-cups we get some Creative branding, red accents and a predominantly plastic construction, This continues across the headband however that is reinforced by a steel band. The arms extend by a little over an inch.

Leatherette is used on the headband and around the ear-cups, covering the foam padding. Inside are 40mm neodymium drivers  with frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz with impedance of 32 Ohms and sensitivity of 106dB/mW. The detachable microphone is a noise cancelling condenser model with frequency response of 100Hz to 18kHz. Sensitivity is rated for -39dBV/Pa with impedance of <2.2k Ohms.

Finally, as far as hardware is concerned, part way down our cable we find a small control pod which controls the mic mute, main volume and has a clip to attach to our clothing.

Creative Draco Review – User Experience/Conclusion

The first thing which struck us when we unboxed the Draco HS880 was how light this headset is. In terms of size it is pretty average for a gaming headset however the weight was much lower than we expected. In some ways this can give a feel of cheapness however there is the bonus that it helps with comfort. Creative have used sturdy and well finished plastic which helps minimise any cheap looks and overall have probably found a good balance.

As we noted above the low weight ensures that the headset can be worn for longer periods of time and it has a surprisingly strong fit right out of the box. We like the fold flat design and the inclusion of a travel pouch. The detachable mic is a bonus  although it would have been ideal if Creative used a single 3.5mm connector (smartphone compatible) with a splitter for PC use. As things stand the lack of mic is great for use on the move, the dangling 3.5mm mic cable not so much.

Minor design quibbles aside, the performance of the Draco HS880 is what matters the most. Noise isolation is good, we get minimal sound leaking out of the headset and with any decent level of volume very litter external noise makes its way in. There is plenty of volume available from the headset and even when at max, no significant distortion. For use with music we found that the HS880 offered a decent experience, plenty of bass and a nice chunky sound in rock. Vocals could have been a little more distinct in the mix but overall no significant issues. Movie playback was very good, clear, loud, plenty bass but gaming is what this headset is designed for and on that front it offers performance which exceeds the price tag. Loads of power to explosions, nice crack to gunfire, clear voice chat from our team/characters and a mic which does a decent job for a compact model.

Summary: With a 2-year warranty, travel pouch and lightweight flexible design the Creative Draco HS880 offers great performance in the £45/$50 price range.
