Creative Sound BlasterX H5 Review

Creative Sound BlasterX H5 Review

Today we are delving back into the world of gaming audio with one of the latest headsets from Creative. With removable mic, cross platform compatibility and chunky looking design it very much looks decent on paper but how was it in use? Welcome to our Creative Sound BlasterX H5 Review.

Creative Sound BlasterX H5 Review – Packaging and Bundle

The H5 arrives in a rather cool case, there is a transparent dome on top and inside the headset is suspended in a tray with the bundled items beneath. Those items are the product documentation, cable to convert from single 3.5mm connector (smartphones etc) to separate mic/audio for PC and then there is the main cable complete with control pod which includes volume dial, a mic mute and button to answer calls as well as play/pause audio on your smart device. Those cables are braided and then we have the removable mic with flexible boom.

That mic is a unidirectional noise reduction condenser with frequency response of 100Hz to 15kHz. Impedance is <2.2k Ohms and sensitivity -40dB.

Creative Sound BlasterX H5 Review – The Headset

The H5 is shown above and uses a design which mixes plastic, steel and aluminium. The headband and earpads are covered in leatherette with memory foam beneath. Each side of the headband extends by around 1.75inches and the cups tilt on the vertical axis to provide a comfortable fit.

On the outside of the cups we find some Sound Blaster X branding and the left cup is the location of our mic and cable sockets.

Inside the ear cups Creative have angled the drivers to minimise resonance and enhance clarity/separation. Those drivers are 50mm full spectrum models with frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz. Sensitivity is 118dB/mW with impedance of 32 ohms.

Creative Sound BlasterX H5 Review – Conclusion

As far as build quality and design goes the Sound BlasterX H5 is a very impressive headset. Every part of the device feels quality and we noted no issues with assembly. There is loads of flex in the headband and plenty of movement in the extension and tilt of the cups. It is also a surprisingly light headset and we always like to see removable audio cable and mic. This makes the H5 ideal for listening to music on the move as we don’t have a massive mic boom pointing out of our head. Of course the 4 pole cable allows us to use the H5 with smartphone/tablet or PS4 and the splitter cable with PC. Creative also note that using an adapter we can also connect to an Xbox One.

For PC users Creative also offer an audio control panel which is tuned for the H5 (and other H series headsets). It offers profiles for the device across a range of genre’s or even specific games and is a free download.

On the audio quality front the impressive performance continues. Creative note that the H5 is not tuned to overemphasize any particular frequency and this gives a very balanced sound. We felt that it actually did seem to emphasise the lower end of the range a little, something which was particularly noticeable on podcasts and the like when there were male voices speaking. That said, the sound was crisp and clear and those recorded with a decent mic sounded awesome. The mic provided by Creative with the H5 is decent, good enough for gaming but as always those who stream more seriously will want a stand alone model.

As far as music and moves goes. Again, the H5 impresses. The headset has a nice chunky sound when needed (for example the rock genre) but detail as required. Movie vocals are crystal clear (again benefiting from that low end clarity we noted) and there is plenty of power to explosions and the like. This continues into the gaming environment where the H5 excels. The Acoustic Engine does a decent job of altering sound from profile to profile however we didn’t really feel the need to use it as the out of the box sound is great. Good separation, great production of gaming soundtracks and nice clear chat from our team mates online.

Summary: One of the best headsets we have used in recent times. Quality audio experience, good platform support and impressive build quality.
