Crucial 32GB Solid State Drive

Packaging and Bundle

The Crucial SSD drive is supplied in a simple plastic package. There is minimal artwork on the package and only some features of the drive are mentioned on the rear. There is nothing included with the drive, however Crucial provided us with an optional accessory for the SSD drive, the SK01 2.5" external storage kit.

The SK01 comes in its own retail package, because Crucial are hoping to sell more SK01 kits than SSD drives as it can be used with any SATA 2.5" drive currently available. Everything inside the package is well protected, because unlike the weightless and very durable SSD drive there are parts which can be easily damaged during transport.

Inside you will find a carrying pouch, a manual and all of the necessary eSATA and USB cables. There is also a 3.5" hot-swap bay and a 5.25" adapter for it.

The SK01 is a subtle, elegant enclosure. The main body is made out of brushed aluminum while the front and rear parts of the enclosure are plastic. There are several connectors which can be seen at the rear. There is the eSATA/SATA connector, a SATA power connector, a USB connector and a 5V power USB connector. If you connect the drive with the USB cable it will not require another power source, but if you choose to use the eSATA connector you will have to use the USB cable to power the device. The SK01 is a particularly useful device as it can be used with any 2.5" SATA drive, therefore it can be used to turn your current laptop drive into a fast portable data storage device if you are upgrading to an SSD.

Externally the Crucial SSD drive looks like a very simple 2.5" drive. It has a simple black metallic chassis and it is very lightweight compared to a mechanical drive. There are only the standard SATA power and data cable connectors at the rear. There are standard screw holes at the sides and the bottom of the chassis, following the 2.5" drive standards, so this SSD is fully compatible with any device using 2.5" SATA HDDs.
