Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 and XBox One: the disaster

Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 and XBox One: the disaster

As you know, the most awaited game of the year, Cyberpunk 2077, was released yesterday. It was released on Playstation, XBox and PC. If on PC, the game is technically to fall on the ground, it proves to be extremely greedy: in 4K Ultra, even with an RTX 3080 it is necessary to activate the DLSS (and thus to calculate in lower definition) so that the game is fluid. It makes you grind your teeth, but everyone will find a suitable setting on their PC.

The problem with this game is rather the console version or should I say THE console versions, because there are actually 7 different consoles:

  • XBox One
  • XBox One X
  • XBox Series S
  • XBox Series X
  • PS4
  • PS4 Pro
  • PS5

The new generation consoles (PS5, XSS and XSX) run the game in backward-compatibility with just higher definition and FPS. A truly optimised next-gen version will be released in 2021 as a free update.

CPU to ground :

According to various analyses, the game is obviously very greedy, but the real problem is that it seems to bring the (very weak) CPU of the current-gen consoles to its knees. We’ve been saying for years that if the amount of RAM was a bit the Achilles heel of the X360/PS3 generation, the one of the X1/PS4 generation is very clearly the CPU. As a reminder, Current Gen consoles use Jaguar architecture CPUs, an architecture derived from FX (already not very powerful in games) but greatly lightened so that they consume little power. A single €60 CPU in 2013 was more powerful than the current Gen consoles. (As a reminder, the CPU of the PS5/XSS/XSX is quite close to a Ryzen 7 3700X at 300€ in 2020, that’s the difference).

The problem with a CPU-Limited game is mainly due to the fact that it is then very complicated to gain FPS by adjusting the graphic options. When you are GPU-Limited, you can lower the resolution, the textures or other… whereas in CPU-Limited, none of this allows you to get convincing gains. So you end up with a game that is rowing… and for which there is not much you can do about it. Those who have experienced Flight Simulator 2020 on a 4C/4T CPU will understand.

The result?

In the case of Cyberpunk, the PS4 runs the game in 720p-900p 30FPS (against 720p 30 FPS for the XBox One). At least in theory. In practice, the game only reaches 30 FPS in quiet areas and indoors. Otherwise, it is around 20-25 FPS depending on the zones. Outdoors, the game can even fall to 15 FPS, all with catastrophic frametimes.

The game is bordering on frustrating and unplayable in some scenes, and has the added luxury of being particularly ugly: the low definition added to the TAA (Temporal Anti-Aliasing) and not-so-foolish textures results in a mush of pixels. You can find examples on the Digital Foundry analysis : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5pHpQqhmR4&t=2s In short, if you want an ugly, rowing game, have fun with Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One and PS4.

To be thrown away?

The current-gen console game is not to be thrown away. The PS4 Pro and especially the XBox One X have CPUs that are identical but with higher frequencies: for info 1.6 GHz for the PS4 and 2.4 GHz for the One X, so + 50 %. Thus the framerate, while not great, rarely falls below 25 FPS. Moreover the game runs in a better definition: 980p-1180p for the PS4 Pro and 1080p-1300p for the One X, which greatly reduces the horrible blur effect.

In the end:

In short, the game is awful on XBox One and PS4, ugly and unplayable limit. It is however correct on their advanced versions. If you want to play this game on console, we advise you to do it only if you have a Pro or a One X. If you only have a basic console, take your pain in patience and play this game when you have a next-gen console. In addition perhaps that by then, the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 will be released.
