Some brands are coming out with the RTX 3080 v2

Because of the capacitor crisis, MSI applies the precautionary principle and brings out (under the radar) a GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio v2.

First MSI…

If MSI doesn’t communicate on why the arrival of this V2 after a few days of life of the V1, it seems obvious that this redesigned/improved model has a different implementation of these capacitors. By putting into perspective the two images recovered from our friends at Videocardz, it becomes crystal clear that looking at the back of the GPU, we see changes in the design.

Even if the backplate is there to hide a lot of things from us, it is obvious that at MSI, the engineers worked quickly and seem to have removed a SP-CAP to add more MLCC capacitors, which are hidden.

This whole story is undoubtedly the fruit of the strategy of secrecy advocated by Nvidia. Some companies have indeed had to skip their test protocols in order to have cards available on the day of the launch. In these conditions, the design problems were only discovered when the cards ended up in the hands of the final consumers… MSI is therefore changing its card but also another version, the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ventus 3X which is now replaced by the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ventus 3X v2 .

The most worrying point about this story is that if a company the size of MSI is changing the PCB design of its new flagship board so quickly, it could indicate that the solutions being considered through the new driver are not as effective as they should be…

Then Asus…

While we thought Asus was being spared, they too decided to put their PCB in fourth gear… Even if the situation is not comparable since Asus managed to postpone the release of the incriminated boards… So there are no “wobbly” V1s in the wild at Asus.

The models concerned are the Rog Strix and TUFF, which will understandably take a little longer to come…
