Intel Solid-State Drive 510 Series (250GB) Review

Post Testing Read/Write Speeds (ATTO)

Benchmark Results

Something which is often a concern for consumers is the effect heavy use has on an SSD and how well the drives inbuilt garbage collection or TRIM works. To look at the impact of our testing on the 510 Series we ran ATTO before and after stressing the drive with our numerous benchmarks. As the results above show the speeds we achieved in both scenarios were very close on read and write, well within the margin of error for a test run and proof that the 510 handles heavy use well.

We also wanted to take this opportunity to show the performance of the 510 against the OCZ Vertex 3 which we recently reviewed. That drive wasn’t used in the main comparison as it has still not reached retail and no finalised firmware has been released. That said, it is important to see where the two drives sit. For this we compare in ATTO and see that the OCZ drive with its new SandForce controller peaks above the 510 series. It is roughly 40MB/s faster on read and significantly better on write.

That doesn’t tell the whole story though as the Intel drive, based on our preliminary Vertex3 testing, performs file transfers better. It will be interesting to see how the two compare as the firmware on each matures.
