Keyboard Roundup Autumn/Winter 2015

A few weeks ago we published a roundup of our favourite headsets from the past year. Today we do the same with a few keyboards, separated into a few different price points. This is our Keyboard Roundup Autumn/Winter 2015 and hopefully it helps you navigate the keyboard jungle when it’s time to buy a new board.

Keyboard Roundup Autumn/Winter 2015 – Best High End

Over the past several years we have tested a bunch of mechanical gaming keyboards and when choosing a favourite/recommended high end board its a really tough decision. Two things swung us towards the BlackWidow Chroma for this round-up… firstly as far as software control panels go, the Razer Synapse App is our favourite. We can control all our Razer gear from one bit of software, it’s nice and intuitive and it has some nice online functionality like being able to sync/download profiles across different PCs. Our second reason was that despite having had access to all these other boards, we keep going back to the BlackWidow time after time. In fact one of the very first samples we received from Razer is sitting to my right, plugged into the main benchmarking PC and still functioning. It’s not exactly in factory clean condition nowadays…but it is still going strong in terms of reliability. Checking back, we received that board in 2011. Well done Razer…

Here’s a little of what we had to say about the Chroma version recently:

“The keyboard in today’s review is in many ways similar to the board we have reviewed a few times in the past. For this reviewer it is however the first time I have tested the version with Razer keys, rather than Cherry MX. While my preference is the Stealth keys, this standard edition does feel good, responds well and is easy to adapt to… …the quality of the body is decent, the board feels solid and the lighting is strong across the board.”

Keyboard Roundup Autumn/Winter 2015 – Best Mainstream

In the section above we chose the BlackWidow from Razer as our favourite high end board, really though it was a very close call between that and the Strafe. Both have multiple versions with various lighting spec’s etc. We opted for the high end Razer board but you could flip both around and have the Strafe RGB at the top and the standard BlackWidow at this price point. What does the Strafe offer?

“Starting with the build quality of the Strafe we have a nice solid feeling keyboard. In a way we kind of miss the brushed metal of some other Corsair models however they have in no way significantly reduced the strength of the body. As well as the solid construction with decent textured finish the board also has a decent weight which means it sits nicely on our desk and we very much like the little touches such as textured spacebar (and alternate keys) which add a feel of quality… …that brings us to the typing experience which is the Strafe’s high point…”

Keyboard Roundup Autumn/Winter 2015 – Best Value

Sometimes you don’t want, or need, mechanical keys…extra USB ports, audio passthrough or fancy lighting. You just want a board that does all the basic stuff quickly and simply. Thats where a product like the 200K comes in. It offers anti-ghosting, a reinforced body, and the ability to lock the Windows key when gaming. Despite its low cost Cougar have also managed to squeeze in some lighting and even a breathing effect. Nice. Simple. Effective…
