Laptops: problematic situation for the end of the year

Most notebook manufacturers expect component shortages to worsen in the third quarter. In addition to a situation that remains extremely tense for CPUs and GPUs, other “secondary” components are now under pressure, hit hard by competition from other industrial sectors such as automotive electronics, consumer electronics and servers, which are mobilizing foundries.

A potentially very tense year-end for notebook PCs

Since the end of last year, shipments have been delayed from quarter to quarter. The gap between the supply of notebooks and their demand should therefore continue to widen, raising the spectre of a very tense fourth quarter. PC portables Of the top 4 global notebook ODMs, only Wistron achieved double-digit sequential shipment growth in the second quarter, while the other three saw shipments fall short of expectations due to limited component supply. Quanta Computer shipped 19 million notebooks in the second quarter, up from 19.7 million in the first quarter, while Compal Electronics shipped 13 million units, slightly lower than the 13.1 million in Q1 2021. For those of you who don’t know the names of these 4 “big” manufacturers at all, they are in charge of manufacturing laptops for most of the major brands in the global PC industry. Among the key “subcomponents” giving the industry cold sweats, many elements directly related to the display are under tension. A situation that also handicaps the major monitor manufacturers.
