Lexar Jumpdrive P10, S23 and S73 USB 3.0 Review

USB storage drives are available in all shapes and sizes, from basic models to those shaped like a million themes such as sports cards, video game characters and food. Then there are the super durable models with waterproof and shockproof coatings. Really though most of us just want a quality USB stick that we can rely on. One which has the speed and capacity to meet our needs and if it doesn’t look silly then that’s a bonus. Lexar look to provide that with their Jumpdrive range and today we have three different models on our test bench to see how they compare.

Lexar package the drives in two different ways, depending on the model we buy. The first packaging, on the lower end drives, is a simple cardboard sheet with plastic shell. This allows us to see the size of the drive, and design, with ease while also noting a number of the features. Then we have the P10 drive, a higher end model with more stylish packaging which retains plenty of product info. Bundled with the Jumpdrives Lexar also tend to provide a short keyring attachment which we can use to store our drive with our keys.

As the drives go we get three designs from Lexar. Starting with the S series the S23 and S73 share the same general styling with a white top and bright coloured body. A small switch in the centre slides back and forward to push out the USB 3.0 connectors and in that area we have a red LED under the surface which lights up when the drive is in use. For the more compact S23 (4.5cm) Lexar use a plastic connector, for the S73 (6cm) it is metal. The P10 drive goes for gloss black as its top surface but retains the slider with red LED and metal USB 3.0 connector. We can see from turning the drives over that the P10 is similar in size to the orange S73 but the P series uses a metal alloy body. Each of the drives is formatted in FAT32 when it arrives and capacities range from 8GB up to 128GB with the P10 range beginning at 16GB and topping out at 64GB. Various colour/capacity combinations are also available and finally for the warranty levels, P10 is lifetime, S23-73 are 3-year.

So what about performance? Well starting with the two mainstream drives Lexar give us two distinct performance levels from their 32GB capacities (all our samples are 32GB). The compact S23 reads at just over 110MB/s and writes at 50MB/s or so. The S73 on the other hand sits at 41-36MB/s which is still in excess of USB 2.0 limits which are around 30MB/s read/write. Lexar do offer a 128GB option in S23 which raises its performance to 100MB/s read, 55MB/s write. The P10 on the other hand is in a different class with a read of over 230MB/s and write nearing 200MB/s. This means we can copy 1GB to that drive in 8s and when moving the file back to our desktop it takes just 5 seconds for that same video file.

So a nice selection of drives overall and Lexar have done a decent job of making each a distinct product in size/build and performance. The P10 is without doubt the star of the show with great performance and exceptional build quality however the S series still feel solid and offer a more value orientated price point.
