LinkSys Cisco Media Hub 405

LinkSys Cisco Media Hub 405

Conclusion

We would like to see HDMI support added to this product which would allow it to be attached directly to a TV and used as a media center via Linux based web browser OS commands … a similar system to one incorporated by Western Digital’s WD TV box but with the Linksys Cisco unit being entirely self contained.

The user interface is intuitive and is extremely easy to configure for a variety of tasks. The price however will immediately alienate a portion of the market but it is worth considering that the level of support from Cisco will go some way to justifying the cost. Another aspect to bear in mind is that the software implementation for additional features on the device are still being developed. For example Cisco have already listened to forum users and have added support for other file types, as well as the playlist and functionality of software like iTunes.

One aspect of the Media Hub which concerned us was charging the end user $9.99 per year after the first year for the use of their Dynamic DNS and Relay service. We find this an unnecessary cost and feel that including this feature for free would go some way to justifying the initial outlay.

If you are unsure if you need the 300 or 400 series … it is easy to work out. If you want the card reader and LCD they are only features of the 400 series. Playing devils advocate you could save the additional cost for the 400 series and add more storage into a 300 unit.

Cisco products have always been sold with a premium price tag but you only have to look at professional industries to see that the majority of the highest quality networks will be powered by Cisco. Without a doubt, if you require a NAS solution to store media with a few extra bits of functionality the Linksys Cisco Media Hub is a strongly recommended purchase.
