Memory for GPUs will increase again

Memory for GPUs will increase again

The upward trend in memory is not a new thing, it’s a topic we’ve covered several times. This situation is confirmed and amplified and will further penalize the GPU market.

GPU memory continues to rise

The price of GDDR6/X DRAM memory increased by almost 25% in the second quarter, for the third quarter, manufacturers expect prices to rise between 8 and 13%. The main reason for these increases would be due to the latest consoles from Microsoft and Sony that use GDDR6 memory chips. Secondly, the GDDR6 chips used in the consoles are 16GB, while the graphics cards use 8GB GDDR6 chips. Dram manufacturers do not have the flexibility to serve both demands. What this means for DRAM suppliers is that once a batch of wafers is committed to the 16GB GDDR6 chips, the same batch cannot be used for the 8GB chips. Finally, the last major factor is the increasing demand for server DRAM. If we add to this the still very strong demand for graphics cards, consuming GDDR6 and GDDR6X; the supply will always remain below the demand for a little while.

The memory price trend for GPUs

Given the supply constraints on other components, then, it is unlikely that any lull in the market will set in.
