Midrange Graphics Card Round Up

Palit 9600GT Sonic

Palit’s 9600 GT Sonic has the most eye catching box of all the products being reviewed today but the use of a frog as a ‘mascot’ is not the best marketing decision ever. There is plenty of information on the product and we are informed of HDCP compliance, memory and core speeds, bus width and various other selling points. Inside the box we have a free copy of Tomb Raider Anniversary but most useful of all, an optical audio cable for use with the onboard optical out.

Palit use a large dual slot cooler on the Sonic which gives the card a very distinctive look, although in many other aspects this card should seem familiar. The reason is that this card has the exact same PCB and components as the Gainward 9600 a few pages back. Gainward is a subsidiary of Palit and they operate in different geographical areas. For example in the USA it is possible to buy Palit but not Gainward. Clockspeeds of 700MHz core, 1000MHz memory and 1750MHz shader exactly match the Gainward model and we can see that the same excellent selection of outputs, including HDMI, DisplayPort and optical out are all included.
