MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X Review

MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X Review

Earlier this week we took a look at the new mid-range GPU from NVIDIA, the GTX 1060 Review. It was an impressive card for its price point and if you are a gamer who wants to play at 1080 or 1440 resolution it could well be the product for you. Having said that, if you want to dip into VR, multi-screen gaming, 4k or add a little more future proofing on the performance front then a 1070 could well be the way to go. Today we take a look at one of the higher spec models in our  MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X Review.

MSI separate their card from the competition by enhancing the components used on the card. For example, we get chokes which maximise efficiency and minimise temperatures and capacitors rated for a longer lifespan (over 10-years). MSI also use dual ball bearing fans which enhance airflow by up to 22% more than standard models while keeping noise at a minimum. Plenty of aluminum fins help the large (8mm) copper heat pipes disperse heat along with the copper GPU plate, the fans remain idle when watching videos, surfing or performing light gaming (They turn on when the GPU hits 60c). There are even some cool LEDs added which add to the overall appeal if you PC case has a window on it and the metal backplate adds strength to the design as well as some extra style.

All key NVIDIA/Industry features are also supported including DirectX 12, CUDA, DirectCompute, 4K, Audio over DisplayPort/HDMI, PhysX, G-Sync, SLI (inc SLI HB) and Dynamic Super Resolution.

MSI go with a 6pin and 8pin combination for the power inputs on this card. Round at the outputs we get a DVI, 3x DisplayPort and an HDMI. With this version of the card MSI go with a spec which is very much towards the high end of the market and have a core speed which varies between 1582MHz and 1772Mhz. It has 8Gb of memory available (GDDR5) which runs on a 256bit bus and is clocked at 8000Mhz.

Although… it is not that simple. Above are the out of the box speeds. If we install MSIs software we have access to three profiles which are configured as follows:

Boost Clock / Base Clock / Memory Frequency
1797 MHz / 1607 MHz / 8108 MHz (OC Mode)
1771 MHz / 1582 MHz / 8010 MHz (Gaming Mode)
1683 MHz / 1506 MHz / 8010 MHz (Silent Mode)

MSI provide a whole load of software with the 1070 Gaming X. First up is the Gaming App which sets the various profiles we noted above. Our LED lighting can also be set to various effects including the always cool breathing. MSI Afterburner allows us to monitor and tweak our card performance in fine detail and Dragons Eye adds interesting functionality such as picture in picture for watching videos while gaming. Also included is X-Split Gamecaster for streaming our gaming sessions to the world.

MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X Review – Conclusion

MSI have created an impressive card in the 1070 Gaming X. It is clear from the outset that it is a quality card and digging a little into the detail we find the usual selection of high-quality components and quality branded parts. MSI even note that they use premium thermal paste on this model which is a nice touch. As far as the overall design goes, this is a great looking card. Big, without being inconveniently so, LEDs which are enhancements rather than tacked on and some extra style in the form of nickel-plated copper heatpipes. The backplate here is nice and chunky with a decent design too.

MSI offer a good software bundle which adds value to the overall product which is always a nice bonus. Added to that each application is easy to use/configure and in only a couple of button clicks, we can run at overclocked speed, further adding value.

Moving to performance we have a card which offers framerates which often exceed the AMD Fury X. The latest games were playable at 1440 and 4k resolution and MSI have kept temperatures at a very reasonable level. As far as noise levels go, also very impressive. When not gaming, or gaming in less demanding titles, the card runs silent (fans off). When stressed with more demanding games the fans never become intrusive, barely audible really.

Summary: An impressive take on the GTX 1070 GPU. Ideal for anyone looking for a high quality card without the price tag of the GTX 1080 but with all the features.
