Netflix would arrive on the gaming scene next year

It seems that Netflix Gaming is not a pipe dream and the platform has set an ambitious goal to launch next year. This is a big turnaround when you remember Netflix CEO Reed Hastings’ statement at the end of 2019, when the executive said the company was focused on series and movies and that he had no ambitions on cloud gaming.

The idea is to offer video games on the Netflix platform by next year, not a new service dedicated exclusively to gaming. Games will appear within current offerings as a new genre of programming – similar to what Netflix has done with documentaries or comedy shows. The company currently has no plans to charge extra for the content, according to an inside source at the company who spoke to Bloomberg on condition of anonymity. After welcoming gaming veterans, the company is actively recruiting to build a team.

While it’s too early to have more details on titles and strategy, there are still some leads. In 2019, Netflix said its biggest competition for continued growth was not other streaming platforms. It’s games like Fortnite that Netflix competes with and loses to, the company had said. So TV shows and movies inspired by certain games are clearly part of the strategy as part of Netflix’s original programming. Original programs around with Dota, Castlevania and The Witcher are in the works. Other programs inspired by video games, based on Magic: The Gathering, Sonic the Hedgehog and League of Legends are also coming.
