New World, the Amazon game, cracks the RTX 3090

If you plan to play Amazon’s latest MMORPG, New World, which we can test in beta, some precautions are necessary… Especially for owners of an RTX 3090.

Indeed, it seems that some users who tried the game New World on a PC equipped with an RTX 3090 had the bad surprise to see their card give up the ghost. Far from being a joke, the phenomenon seems to have affected quite a few beta users. As soon as the game was launched, the fan speeds went up to 100% and a black screen followed. A user on twitter confirms having encountered the same problem with a second EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 FTW3 graphics card that died while trying to play New World.

RTX 3090s “burned out” after a few minutes of play?

So how is a graphics card destruction possible by a “simple” game? According to wccftech, the RTX 3090 is the only graphics card with a 24GB GDDR6X memory buffer, so it is likely that the initial instance of the game was too heavy for the memory chips or the GPU itself. The consequence would be high temperatures that resulted in permanent damage to the components. It’s likely that Amazon didn’t think about this when it opened the game to users. Once the damage is done, there is no solution except to put the card under warranty. A particularly surprising situation, but one that is not limited to a few isolated cases. We propose you here the translation in French of message on the official forum “New World”:

Users speak out on the official forum of the game

Hello, So, after launching the New World beta, the game started loading, followed immediately by fan speeds increasing to 100%, fps dropping to 0, then my monitors shutting down and my NVIDIA video card not detected. So, I restart the PC and everything seemed to work fine, I even tried a few more games to make sure and I had no problems. So I tried to go back to New World again and the same thing happen, but this time I heard a loud “pop” and now my 3090 will not POST on bootup. This is the 2nd 3090 FTW3 Ultra directly from EVGA that comes to die while playing or trying to play New World, my first one died during Alpha, but I was able to play for about a week before this happened. But the exact same thing happens with this card, it just happened while I was actually in the game. Anyway, I contacted EVGA for a full refund on the video card or another RMA and informed them of the problem. Now, it should be noted as well that I have not had any other problems with any of the other dozens of games I have been using with this card for about 8 months. Also, I installed my old NVIDIA GTX 980 card on the same PC and it works fine, with everything including the New World beta, no problems so far in alpha or closed beta. So I’m not sure what the cause is here. Most likely its two faulty cards from EVGA, but I think this issue needs to be looked at from both sides. If further information is needed please let me know and badly be happy to help. If you follow the forum thread, you will find that others are mentioning the same problems including on other brands of 3090. So for the time being, it is appropriate to stay away from the beta of this game…
