Nvidia announces its CMP HX products dedicated to cryptos

Nvidia CMP HX: the answer to stop the madness of the market?

NVIDIA has just announced a new series of products specifically designed for crypto-money mining.

The RTX 3060 is “castrated” to limit its use in mining

Nvidia has also just announced that the next GeForce RTX 3060 will have a special driver that will automatically detect specific mining algorithms and in these conditions, the card will be restricted and therefore not really a good choice. This would ensure that the RTX 3060 will not be considered a good choice for miners. If this is true it is an important step because until now Nvidia has never really tried to discourage mining from its GPUs. The CMP HX series should not be considered as graphics cards, in fact, they will not even have display outputs. These cards will be similar to the Pascal P10X series that were available in a confidential way, during the previous wave of Cryptos delirium (we will think of the GTX 1070). NVIDIA has announced four CMP HX cards, which will offer an Ethereum hash rate from 25 MH / s at 125W to 86 MH / s at 320W. These cards will be offered with up to 10GB of VRAM, indicating that this would be a GPU similar to the GA102. According to the announcement, the CMP HX series will already be available in Q1, while the 10GB models will go on sale in Q2 Nvidia CMP HX We can get an idea of the interest of these solutions from the table published by Anantech.

NVIDIA Hardware Hash Rates
Hash Rate Power Efficiency MH/s/W
RTX 3090 121 MH/s 290 W 0.42
RTX 3080 98 MH/s 224 W 0.44
90HX 86 MH/s 320 W 0.27
RTX 3070 62 MH/s 117 W 0.53
RTX 3060 Ti 60 MH/s 120 W 0.50
RTX 2080 Ti 49 MH/s 240 W 0.20
50HX 45 MH/s 250 W 0.18
40HX 36 MH/s 185 W 0.19
30HX 26 MH/s 125 W 0.21

Nvidia’s press release :

NVIDIA Announces Crypto Mining Processor (CMP) HX Series

We are end-to-end players. We are obsessed with new game features, new architectures, new games and technology. We designed GeForce GPUs for gamers, and gamers want more. However, NVIDIA GPUs are programmable. And users are constantly discovering new applications for them, from weather simulation and gene sequencing to deep learning and robotics. Mining for crypto-money is one of them. With the launch of GeForce RTX 3060 on February 25, we are taking an important step to ensure that GeForce GPUs are in the hands of gamers and Reduce by half the hash rate The RTX 3060 software drivers are designed to detect specific attributes of the Ethereum crypto-currency extraction algorithm and limit the hash rate, or efficiency of crypto-currency extraction, by approximately 50%. This only makes sense. Our GeForce RTX GPUs introduce cutting-edge technologies-such as RTX real-time ray tracing, DLSS AI accelerated image scaling technology, ultra-fast Reflex response rendering for best system latency, and more-designed to meet the needs of gamers and those who create digital experiences. To address the specific needs of Ethereum mining, we are announcing the NVIDIA CMP, or Cryptocurrency Mining Processor, product line for professional mining. CMP products – which do not make graphics – are sold through authorized partners and optimized for best performance and operating efficiency. They do not meet the specifications required of a GeForce GPU and therefore do not impact the availability of GeForce GPUs for gamers. For example, CMP lacks display outputs, which improves airflow during mining so that they can be more densely packed. CMPs also have lower core voltage and peak frequency, which improves the energy efficiency of the mining operation. Creating custom products for customers with specific needs offers the best value for customers. With CMP, we can help miners build the most efficient data centers while preserving GeForce RTX GPUs for gamers.
